American officials have main tained that the slaying last Sep tember occurred during a drunken barracks brawl with no racial overtones. But the defense attorney, Capt. Norman H. Kirshman of Milford, N.J., said tho victim of the incident and a number of other airmen called the de fendants "dirty niggers" and hurled other insults. "I am not asking for acquittal because my boys are colored," Kirshman said. "But racism is there. It is there today, it will bo there tomorrow and it was there Sept. 6." Sept. 6 is the day Airman L.C. Robert Padgett, 23, of Woodlawn, Va. died of a frac tured skull following a brawl at the U.S. air base near Evrcux.
