Through the efforts of the Shriners and their 17 hospitals, several thousand crippled chil dren are being given straight limbs and the opportunity to live normal, productive lives. Helping make this possible is the East-West College All-Star game in San Francisco s Kezar Stadium, a highlight of each Christmas season since 1925. Here some of the nation's top collegiate football stars assem ble for what is often one of the grid season's most exciting games. Last year was typical, with East eking out one-touch. down triumph, 25 to 19. This year's game will be held Dec. 28th. Shrine Parade Before each game, colorful Shrine parade units fill the field and lend a festive atmosphere to the annual classic. But the East-West clash is more than just a football game or a spec tacle. It is an example of how banners and grid greats co operate to support a cause best described by the game s motto, "Strong legs run that weak legs may walk." During their stay in San Francisco, the players visit the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, there to meet a boy or girl who has adopted him while he is in the Golden Gate City. ' Each child sings the school song of his player. The football heroes, in turn, distribute gifts and encouragement and hope for the future of the afflicted youngsters. Each year outstanding foot ball stars are added to the list of well-known names who have played in the East-West clas sic. Names like Johnny Lujack of Notre Dame; Bronco Nagur ski of Minnesota; Bob Water field of U.C.L.A.; George Mc Afee of Duke, and Dick Batten, College of the Pacific, the first alumnus of the San Francisco Shriners Hospital ever to par ticipate in the East-West game. The 17 Shriners hospitals have treated 125,000 children since 1922 and are operated at an an nual budget of $7 million. The hospitals are open to all chil dren under 15 years of age re gardless of race, color or creed whose! parents are unable to pay for the needed surgical, medical and hospital facilities, ALASKAN AMERICANS ANCHORAGE, Alaska (UPI) A recently released census publication, "State of Birth," reports that only 18 per cent of the 160,833 white persons living In Alaska who were born In the United States were born in Alas ka. (UPI) Whimsical Trees 'Dress Up' Home Tiny, whimsical Christmas trees that you make yourself can do a great deal to dress up your home during the holidays. The greatest fun in making these miniature trees is in dreaming up the ideas for them yourself. But, here are a few ideas for trees to get you start ed thinking in the right direc tion. Christmas tree balls in gradu ated sizes can be stacked one on the other by attaching the balls, Christmas seals, tinsel, picture hanging wire. Funnel or cone shapes (tin or paper) ranging from large at the bottom to smallest at the top can be stacked for a smart effect, too. Ready-Made Egg Nogs Save Work For many of us, Christmas just isn't Christmas without the tasty treat of egg nog. A wel come holiday sight in the tradi tional silver punch bowl at Christmas gatherings, and an equally welcome quick refresh ment for friends who've dropped in unexpectedly, egg nog is the perfect holiday drink for young and old alike. If you're planning a party or expecting mentis ana lamny over on Christmas Eve, bring out the punch bowl and stock up on bottled egg nog from your favorite dairy. You'll find to day's ready-made egg nog bet tor than most home-made ver sions and it saves so much ex tra work. lar concerts of his New York Philharmonic. But such children! One is Heidi Lehwalder. She Is 14 and her daddy plays in the Symphony Orchestra of Seat tle where she was born. When she sits- at the concert harp you might feel the harp was about to swallow her. You shouldn't kid yourself. She has it licked. There is Weldon Berry, Jr., 16 and a Texan but a Texan who plays the clarinet as though he had been born to it, and may be he was. And Shulamith Ran, 16, (a girl, in case you're won dering,) who composes and plays the piano, both on a level way above that of the teen-ager. Bernstein played with these children in the Philharmonic's second "Young People's Con cert" of the season. These con certs have long been fixtures in the lives of New York kiddies whose parents push them to ward music. They're important enough to the Philharmonic for its music director, Bernstein, to take personal charge. Listened-to Teacher .. Besides, they afford him the opportunity for his famed ap pearances on television which have made him America's most listened-to-music teacher. Musicians have long been hep to the public appeal of the young and Erich Leinsdorf, the new music director of the Bos ton Symphony, is no second fiddle to Bernstein in using this appeal. In his regular Boston concerts this week he unveiled a Turkish girl. She is Idel Biret, a mere 22, and of the new order of Turkish women since she never wore an obscuring veil, nor would there be any sense in it. Leinsdorf un veiled her as a virtuoso pianist and she did him and herself proud by going to town with Rachmaninoff's Third Concerto. It was her United States de but but she already has some reputation in Europe. She can Sualify as a musical symbol of le liberation of Turkish wom en. When she was four she gave her first concert at the request of the president of Turkey. The result was that the Turkish gov ernment took over her musical education. Brilliant Musical Promise Another youth of brilliant mu sical promise is Daniel Domb, 19. He has just made his de but on the music bigtime in a recital in New York's Town Hall, playing such toughies for his instrument, the cello, as Brahms' E Minor Sonata and the variations on one string by Paganini. He is a graduate of New York's High. School of Mu sic and Art and still a student at the Juilliard School of Music. Meanwhile, George Szell, ven erable music director of t h e Cleveland Orchestra, was oc cupying Bernstein's podium at the regular concerts of the New York Philharmonic, beginning this week with his authoritative readings of Beethoven. During the next three weeks while he is in charge, the orchestra will recognize current music only once and otherwise get no closer to the present than DeBussy and the end of the 19th cen tury. Aesthetically they're relaxing the Philharmonic's patrons for Bernstein's return after the new year. His plan is to shake up the patrons with "the avant garde." That will include "new orchestral sounds," synthetic electronic sounds, and "the jazz trend," but all interlarded with Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mendel sohn and others of the tried-and-safe.
