Diamond Jewelry
Popular Gift Item
Women have an affinity for
diamond jewelry, especially at
Christmas. Of all the jewelry
forms, pins are the most prac
tical and "safe" Sift choices
because they are adaptable to
most apparel.
The classic gold pin lavished
with a diamond spark keep
company with all ages: on the
wool suit of a college girl, on
her mother's velvet cocktail hat,
or on grandmother's' silky holi
day dress. -
' Best-liked designs for pins are
nature forms, leaves, flowers,
birds and even butterflies. Gold
leaf pins with engraved veins
emerging from diamond tipped
stems look freshly fallen. Half
blown buds and floral iprays
come in realistic or stylized ver
sions. Solitary sunburst pins are
studies In contrast, with alter
nating petals of polished and
Florentine-finished gold.
Fre-form and abstract pin
designs, dramatized with; dia
monds, are reminiscent of fam
. nus sculptures and paintings.
Earrings come in designs to
match pins to complete the
jeweled ensemble.
High Fashion . ;-'; .
"Occasional" rings for right
hand wear are true high-fash-
Jon gifts. Domes of polished
gold are punctuated with star
ry diamonds; strand of 14-karat
gold are twisted Into flower sil
houettes and spirals which seem
to soar off the finger,
What looks like a mound of
silver branches is a ring design
of platinum leaves embracing
a bunch of diamond and creamy
pearl berries. Criss ' - crossing
leaves at the top of a ring lit
erally ."grow" around diamond-set
vine which encircles
the finger.
Pendants continue to he pop
ular, especially the single diamond-droplet
first made fam
ous by television personalities.
There are three dimensional
flowers, four-leaf clovers, and
eyen question - mark pendants
shimmering with good-luck dia
monds, for wear on delicate
necklace chains.
Lockets
Victorian-type, lockets of glis
tening gold are enjoying a re
vival. Oval, round and heart
shape lockets have a deep-set
center diamond on the cover
or are engraved with forget-me-nots.
Necklace clasps are an un
usual fashion jewel gift. For
the woman who wears a favo
rile necklace, there are clusters
of pearls and diamonds nestled
on the topside of a clasp in sev
eral designs. Not only Is the
jeweled clasp practical, it's
beautiful and meant to be worn
in Ihe center front hollow of the
neck.
Jeweled clasps accnmmodale
anywhere from one to five
strands of beads in a necklace.
Before selecting i gift necklace
clasp, it's imperative to know
how many strands of beads
there are in a woman's favorite
necklace. After the holidays,
the clasp and necklace can be
taken to the jewelers for. the
changing of the old for the new
jeweled clasp.
Watches, a time-honored gift,
are tailored and dressy to keep
tabs on time very fashionably.
Watch bracelets, of . flexible
gold mesh or rigid wristbands,
offer variety in widths.
Oval, square, pear-shape and
round "faces" are framed with
the tiniest of diamonds; num
bers are set with gems. Elabo
rate watchface covers hide the
time of day until they are flip
ped with the touch of a finger.
Enameled and gold lapel
watchea haloed with diamonds
are suspended from bnwknot or
solid gold bar pins; this time
piece revival recalls when it was
fashionable to wear watches on
lapels.
Holiday Custom
Is Explained
The tradition of alms-giving
at unristmas began with a leg'
end, as did so many other holi
day customs, It was believed at
one time that the Christ Child
went from door to door during
the holiday season, disguised as
a beggar, and asking alms, in
search of kind and doserving
souls. . , . ..,
. Since no. one knew . when or
where He might appear, Chris
tians i feared to turn . beggars
from their door lest they un
knowingly turn away the Christ
Child.
Thus began lh custom of
charity to the poor at Christ
mastime; today this charity is
still practiced, but not out of
fear, rather, It is done out of
love, generosity and thankful
ness by those who have been
materially blessed. ,
FOCAL POINT
Hospitality
during the holidays hoc ins with
a mauve, gracious inoie soiling.
As the focal point, nothing can
surpass the elegance of heavy
silvorplate pieces such as Ihe
punch bowl set shown here. By

Parakeets Make Good
Gifts for Christmas
Want to eive relatives and
friends an extra surprise this
Christmas? Then plan on giv
ing a parakeet, the third most
popular pet,, right behind pup
pies and kittens,
This suggestion comes from
French's Pet Bird Laboratories
in Rochester, N. Y., which re
ports that for the last several
years those clever little birds
have become increasingly pop
ular as gift items.
They suggest, too, that the
bird be taught a Christmas
greeting for an added touch.
Parakeets learn from constant
repetition of words and
phrases," a spokesman points
out. "It's merely a matter ot
time and patience." You may
not get your Parakeet to learn
"Silent Night" between now and
Christmas, but chances are he'U
reward you with a cheery yule-
cuttle bone, and "gravel. dIus
fresh water. ' Add spray millet ;
or a treat bell for time to time
for extra enjoyment. : i
S. Keen the hirrl runs rloan
the food and water cups should
be emptied and cleaned daily. :
Change the paper liner on th.
cage bottom and sprinkle with
iresn gravel every few days.
Scrape,, do not wash, the
perches when necessary.
The cars and feeding of a
parakeet are really so simple
that a child can be given the
complete responsibility. As a
matter of fact, parakeets ar.
more and more frequently
found in nursery schools, kin
dergartens, and lower grades,
where they become classroom
projects.

Easier To Mimic
Mom can probably do the best
job, say the experts at French's
because Its easier for birds to
mimic the high tones o( a wo
man's voice. In any case, only
one person should be elocution
coach to the bird.
For new parakeet owners,
here, from the packers of
French's Parakeet Seed, are
some tips.
1. Don't expect too mucn ot
your pot right away, it takes a
few days for mm to adjust 10
new surroundings and he may
act dull and drowsy. At first,
it's wise to keep his cage cov
ered' for several hours during
the day. Before long, your pet
will feel settled and will be his
usual playful, friendly self. '
Try not to frighten or excite
him, Move quietly when near,
the cage and talk to him In a
soft, calm voice.
Out of Drafts ;
.1. Keep the cage out of direct
sunlight and drafts and in a spot
where the bird will not be subj
ect to sudden, extreme changos
In temperature.
4. Feed your bird daily. And
don't mistake a dish of empty
seed hulls for a full cup of
seed. His diet should consist of
seed, treat, conditioning food,
