Here he is snown in London the day after his eldest daughter, Diana, was found dead. (UPI) Winston Churchill To Observe 89th Birthday Saturday By ROBERT MUSEL United Press International LONDON (UPI) - Sir Wins ton Churchill celebrates his 89th birthday next Saturday (Nov. 30), the classc case history of a man who reached old age by disregarding the advice of his doctors. They warned the great states man many years ago that he was smoking too much, drink ing too much, eating too much, working too hard, sleeping too little. He was prone to serious ill ness and accident and his fam ily were short-lived anyway. So, the doctors said, he ought to re strict his activities, watch his would not agree it was per manent. Within a few weeks he was propelling himself in a wheel chair and demanding that his nurse get him a drink. "The doctor says you are not to have anything strong," she admonished. "In that case," said Sir Wins ton, "I'll take a brandy." He recovered from that stroke although it left him with a weakness of the left leg that makes him somewhat unstady on his feel. Since odds medical or otherwise, have never daunted him, he played a rugged game of polo till he was 55, drank his friends under the table, smoked constantly, insist ed on full-course meals from oysters to dessert and worked around the clock when neces sary. En route to a longevity rec ord for British prime ministers he survived more than 15 major illnesses and accidents. Two or three of which could easily have been fatal and five strokes. The first of these, 15 years ago, paralyzed him but Sir Winston PROTEIN SUPPLY WASHINGTON (UPI)-About four ounces of American cheese or three-fourths cup of cottage cheese will provide one-third of a day's protein needs, accord ing to U.S. Department of Ag riculture home economists. them. Sir Winston is the indomitable, un conquerable leader in war, the most honored man of his timo in peace. But behind the public tri umphs are often private trage dies and Sir Winston is sadden ed this year by the suicide of his oldest daughter, Diana, 54: the sudden death of his son-in-law I Lord Audley, husband of Sarah Churchill and the health of his beloved wife of 55 years, Lady Clementine. But nothing private or public has ever been able to crush Sir Winston for very long. And the bulldog jaw will grip his cigar, his fingers rise for the V-sign salute which is his trademark as the crowds gather in front of his house in Hyde Park Gate to wish him still another happy birthday.
