ANDREWS united Press International Lutherans have been given some discouraging news about the academic level of the theo logical students who will some day fill the pulpits of their church. In a report on the nine U.S. seminaries of the Lutheran Church in America, the Rev, Inquest Jury Held Regarding Traffic Death A Jackson county inquest jury Friday cleared a St. Mary's School student of any possible negligent homicide charge re sulting from the traffic death of a fellow student and passen ger in his car. The jury considered facts sur rounding the accident wnen a car, operated by Stephen Greg ory Erb, 17, of 1225 Stevens St., hit a power pole, killing Michael Joseph Latendresse, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle J. The jury decision read: "There Is insufficient evidence to be lieve anyone is guilty of a crime causing the death of the de cedent." District Attorney Alan Holmes said this will probably end the investigation unless new evi dence appears. . I Witnesses who testified were: Medford Police Sgt. This aspect of guidance is called vocational in that it is helping the student choose the Dr. Conrad Bergendoff said 60 per cent of all students enrolled narj only (J averages in college. Dr. Bergendoff, executive sec retary of the denomination's Board of Theological Education said this discovery came as a shock and -was - a disturbing commentary on the role of the church today. "It may well be' that science and engineering are capturing the best minds of our genera tion because of the prestige and emoluments of these profes sions," he said. "But in the same degree the church has lost its leadership in current thinking." ' , . ; ; ; Higher Standards , i The results of Dr. Bergen doffs year -' long survey were mailed to .the . denomination's 6,913 pastors .with a plea for higher academic standards In tne seminaries. "Surely the Lord can use men with limited intellectual endow ments," he said. "But this does not excuse a church which can not attract its most gifted men into this nigh calling." Dr. Bergendoff asserted that seminaries have a right and an obligation to be more selective among applicants. The best de vice might be to require a B average of all college graduates seeking admission, he said. The education chief proposed a series df sweeping changes designed to improve theological training. Seminary professors should be better paid, he said, and the curriculum should be revamped to put more stress on modern literature and thought, Presbyterian institutions have been asked to use their building and Investment funds as a tool to help wipe out racial discrimi nation. .. . ' , The United Presbyterian Church's Commission on Reli gion and Race suggests for ex ample, that the denomination make deposits only in banks and savings and loan associa tions that encourage Negro cli ents. Church agencies also were asked to insist on fair-employment clauses in all building contracts. The denomination spends $2 billion a year on new construction. The Rev. Gayraud S. "The great multitude of church, members try to get a lifetime of mileage out of their teen-age view of the Christian faith," the Methodist bishop said. The for mal part of the program in volves regular individual group sessions. The subject matter generally is planned but is ad justed to the needs of the indi vidual or group. A variety of jobs are surveyed as to qualifi cations, procedures for prepar ing tor them, etc. Discussions are held concerning study hab its, job seeking, interview tech niques, applying to colleges and trade schools. Personal Basis A great deal of individual guidance also is involved. Prob lems which are peculiar to each individual are handled on a per sonal basis. The informal guidance pro gram also is important. This is the type of guidance that is built on the relationships be tween teachers and students. It goes on continuously. It occurs every time a teacher talks to a student about behavior or ad vises him on methods of study ing. Guidance is an important part of the high school program. It should be supported and encour aged by parents.
