10 B SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1963 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD. OREGON Council Receives Letter About Center A Medford City Council execu tive committee report regard ing the property on East Jack son Street now occupied by the Senior Activity Center was ac cepted by the council at its meeting Thursday. A request to . purchase the property for use as a park has been made by the Medford Shopping Center, which owns property on two sides of the Senior Activity Center. 'The committee proposed that letters be obtained from the agencies required before any side could be undertaken; ob tain two appraisals of the prop erty, and notify the Rogue Val ley Council on Aging, sponsor ing agency of the Senior Center, ol tne possibility ot uie sale. Letter to Council In a letter to the City Coun cil from Mark A. Goldy, Shop ping Center representative, ne explained that the Shopping Center wished to see tne prop- erty at 601 E." Jackson St. de veloped for park and recrea tion purposes, the purpose for wnicn tne lana nas oeen ded icated. Since the site is now being used by the Senior Center, Goldy explained that the Shop ping Center has an option on the property at 811 Bennett St. WWf ,B aDfCK WEST : Home Grown Capital Comic " WASHINGTON (UPI) - If s perchance near the shank of : some evening you snouia De pas : sing a local tabernacle called . the Marquee Lounge you would harken to the sound of a young prophet exhorting the multi- tudes. -The volume, timbre and fer . vor of his voice might lead you - to believe that you had run : upon a Goldwater organizer ' proselyting a covey of Rocke- teller precinct coairmen. But should you stop to Inves tigate you would lino tne spell binder identified on the bill board as Mark Russel, Washing ton's only home grown comedian. While the U. S. Capital fairly abounds with comical people, most of them arrived here through the electroal process. What seta Russell apart is the fact that he manages to be amusing without running for public office. Moreover, he is Intentionally funny, which is al so a switch. But the main thing that really distinguishes Russell is his lim itless capacity for bad timing. Consider, for instance, that a number of years of trying to build up his act in Washington's virtually non-existent night life, he finally Bot booked into a New York club. Playing Hew York is a must tor anyone in now dubuibbb and Russell viewed his engage ment there at hia bis chance to grab the brass ring. So what happened; His entire stint was per- formed In a publicity blackout 1 caused by a newspaper strike, ' The latest misfortune to be- fall Russell Is even more heart- i rending and is connected, as I everything else is these days, ' ..i.'lU ,li. It was a popular hangout with the Capitol Hill crowd, particu larly at lunch, but was not the kind of place that was likely to attract the limelight. When Russell left he was al most so obscure as when he started, which was just barely possible. So what happened? The Baker case blazed into II.-- natlnnnl haarlliniul. rorrvlnff with it Russell's old stamping ground, which turned out to be the home of the now celebrat ed Quorum Club. ; At his present post, Russell nightly" sings a little ballad, a sort of contemporary folk song, entitled "We're Sorry, Bobby, That You Got Caught." He really means, however, that he's sorry it didn't happen sooner. which, if purchased, it would offer to the city in exchange for the East Jackson Street prop erty. . Goidy said the property, to cost $20,000, would be in the name of either the city or the Rogue Valley Council on Aging. If the : Senior group does not wish the Bennett Street prop erty, the Shopping Center will contribute the same amount of mnnnv fnr Hf.v-.lnnm-.nt of an other site for the Senior Center. Goldy said the .shopping Cen ter, in acquiring the site, would Live Broadcasts Urged by Solon SALEM (UPI) -Live broad casts of proceedings at the 1965 legislative session were called for Thursday by Sen. Vernon Cook, D-Portland. Cook proposed the state spend up to $50,000 at the next ses sion to make tne broadcasts available to every radio station in Oregon. Cook claimed there was "al most complete failure of com munication between the mem bers of the legislature and the people of Oregon." The Cook proposal calls for the state to finance the techni cal origin of broadcasts from the two houses and committee meetings. He estimated the pro ject would not cost more than $1,000 a week. accept title with the present restrictions. Once purchased the Shopping Center would deed it back to the city with a per petual restriction that it be used for park and recreational uses only, but that it would be de veloped by the Shopping Cen-ter. ' The Shopping Center contem plates the site including foun tains, park benches and like improvements. . . . Owns Nearby Building Goldy noted that the Shopping Center owned the building to the east of the Senior Center which will be removed starting April 1, 1964. In earlier action at the Med ford Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, a repre sentative of the Rogue Valley Council on Aging requested the continued support of the city in programming recreation activ ities for the senior age group. In a letter from the commis sion to the city council, James Sullivan, president, reiterated ils earlier recommendations which recognize the city's re sponsibility for providing park and recreation facilities and programs for all age groups. At the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Russ Jam ison, Rogue Valley Council on Aging president, urged the com mission to consider the possi bility of recommending to the city council that another parcel of city owned property be made available for relocation of the Senior Activity Center. -RADIO CLOG fflonta Condemnation Suits Are Filed Six condemnation suits were filed in Jackson County Circuit Court this week by the Oregon State.
