Watklnt y More Active The Animal, The Tougher The Meet Did you know that extreme laziness is desirable in any ani mal destined to become an en tree on a dinner menu? It's true. Exercise toughens muscles, makes them fibrous and stringy. The older, or the more active the animal was be fore it was slaughtered, the sharper your knife will have to be when the steak, or coast comes to your table. Age is also a determining factor. From old cattle comes tough meat. The same formula applies to deer, chicken, rabbit, sheep, or any game or domestic tlesn. There is at least one startling exception to the age and exer cise business in relation to toughness! it is the flesh of fish Regardless of age or amount of exercise, or number of miles traveled, fish-flesh is just as tender as it was when the fish was very young and before it ever went anywhere under is own power. Even the aged fish has tender flesh, and toe, it's a pretty well established fact that a fish continues to grow, at least a little, as lone as it lives, So, if you are ordering meat instead of fish, insist that your steak or roast was cut from an animal that was relatively young, and as lazy as a pet coon. Small Egg, Big Crocodile Did you ever know that the larest animal on the face of this earth that is actually hatched from an egg is a cro- cod le? It's a fact. There are crocodiles in the Nile river that may be 20 feet m length and weigh nearly 1,000 pounds, They are hatched from an egg that is barely larger than an egg laid by a goose. Did you know that the giant squid of the North Atlantic ocean is the largest invertebrate in the world. Not only is this animal backboneless, but it does not have a single bone in its body. Without the buoyancy sup plied by water, these 50-foot monsters would be nothing but helpless, shapeless masses of soft flesh. Did you know that the very smallest animal in the world, as far as it is known, is the shrew? This strange little ani- mnl ie AniimnoH hu nam,- UJlm poison sacs and the bite is as deadly as that of a venomous snake. The tiny creature bites its victims and injects venom into the wound. With its appe- tite and hair-trigger temper, to gether with its dangerous bite, the shrew could be a dangerous animal, except for its dimmu tive size. But for a mammal whose body is barely two inches long, the shrew is a pretty tough little guy. Objectionable Flesh Did you know too, that if your family cat caught and killed a shrew, it would not eat it? By some strange, chemical revul sion, inherent in these peculiar little animals, their flesh is ob jectionable to flesh eating predators. Probably you are acquainted with the fact that the only mammal in the world gifted with true flight is the bat. The one you might credit with fly ing ability would be the flying squirrel, but this timid little creature can't fly at all; like the so-called "flying fish," the best it can do is glide; better it had been named the "gliding squirrel." Matador-Officer Throws the Bull MANCHESTER, England (UPI) A policeman became a matador and got his bull on the rainy streets of Manchester Thursday. Policeman Johnny Oliver won the bullfight by bringing the bull to us knees with a headon tackle. The bull had escaped from a local slaughter house, charged through three miles of streets, knocked down and injured a woman and terrified women and children. The 500-pound bull was corn ered between a truck and a po lice car. Oliver moved in and grabbed it, twisting its head un til it dropped to its knees. The bull, which had been hit by a truck, died before humane officers could get to the scene to destroy it. A FIGHT A DAY ORONO, Maine (UPI) - Mr. and Mrs. Orrin W. Giggey say the key to a happy marriage is to have a fight every day or so. On their 67th wedding anni versary Thursday, Mrs. Giggey, 89, said, "I make it a point never to agree with him." The 88-year-old Giggey, when asked to disclose the basis of their happy life, said, "I think it's because we've always managed to have a good scrap every c;ouple of days." Speaking before a meeting of the American Anthropological Assn. which is holding its 62nd annual conference in San Francisco Dr. Steven Polgar of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America said that in a study be conducted in the Bay area into the eating habits of pregnant women only nine per cent named pickles as their favorite food. Polgar told the group that 30 per cent of the women inter viewed named fruit juices as their most popular food while expecting. Meat and fish polled a close second place. He said on a national level pickles ranked in fifth place as the food most craved by preg nant women. PANTS BURGLAR LOS ANGELES (UPI) - Jew elry store owner Harry Treis man, 49, lost his pants in a robbery Thursday. Treisman told police a gun man forced him to turn over $250 from the store's cash drawer and made him take off his pants, using his belt to tie his hands behind his back. The robber took the pants with him. far-fetched as it may sound. To appreciate its worth you have to realize that all creatures with central nervous systems operate on self-generated elec tricity. It flows in direct currents, carrying nerve impulses. These power the built-in communica tions which permit people and other organisms to control themselves. Transmitting and receiving radios are similarly powered. Their impulses travel through the earth's magnetic field, and so do those of creatures. They have to the creatures exist within the field Smooth-flowing Now, the earth's magnetic field is, generally speaking, smooth-flowing. The smoother its flow the better are radio communications. But there are continual variations which coin cide with day becoming night and vice versa. These are relatively minor, however. What really kicks up storms in tne eartn's magnetic field are the cycling magnetic disturbances on the sun which result in "sun spots." While these magnetic storms rage, radio communications are at their worst. Drs. Howard Friedman, Rob ert 0. Becker and Charles H. Bachman of the State Univer sity of New York and Syracuse (N.Y.) University have been fascinated for some time by the possibility that magnetic storms can do no less to the interior communications of the human nervous system. The idea was not a new one. They undertook do ing that by comparing a statis tically measurable human phe nomenon with a statistically measurable phenomenon of the earth's magnetic field. Varying Admissions Their human phenomenon was the varying daily admis sion rates for seven central New York , state psychiatric hospitals over a four-year pe riod. Their magnetic phenome non were daily variations in the intensity of the earth's magnet ic field over the same four years. These phenomena were trans lated into mathematical con- 3782 HAVE SWITCHED See Bruce Bauer Lumber Ad on Page 2A ceptions which made them con parible on a statistical basis, and the comparison revealed a high order of statistical signi ficance. That is, the greater the in tensity of the earth's magnetic field due to "sun spots" and other natural interference com ing out of the cosmos, the high er the rate of psychiatric hos pital admissions as mathemat ically correlated.
