If they are to make it. mmr. terback Bill Douglas and full back Junior Coffey will have to have better days than they did last week when thev dumped by UCLA, 144. Washington, with a 5-4 rec ord, is rated a 14-point choice to whip the Cougar club that rolled to an easy 32-15 win over Stanford in its last outine. Washington State is 3-5-1. Slightly Weaker Southern California is in a slightly weaker position tiian me HusKies. Tne Trojans have a 6-3 over-all record, but they are 2-1 in Big Six conference piay against 3-1 for Wash n-rt-m. The Huskies play one more con ference came than USC. mH thus would have the better per centage standing if both win. In addition, Washington whipped the Trojans, but good, in their meeting. USC is rated a 13ft point cnoice to dispose of uie bruins, who have been kicked nround all season until putting on their belleve-it-or-not show against Washington. A crowd of about 85,000 is expected. Stanford and California, just playing for the glory of it. as usual will draw a sellout crowd of 90,000. Neither has a nance to play anywhere after this game until next season. Craig Morton, the great Cal quarterback, makes the (J l(in Bears appear to be the light choice. But the gambling men have installed Stanford as n one point favorite. That one is hard to figure. California has a 4-4-1 record, Stanford is 2-7. Two of the better teams in the West clash at Eugene. Both Boston and Buffalo have compiled 5-5-1 records, second to Houston's 6-4 mark in the Eastern. Division. The loser of the Bean town brawl will tum ble from title consideration if the Oilers win at San Dieeo. The Chargers' 8-2 record places them two games up on Oakland in the Western Division. The Patriots, who dropped a 28-21 thriller to the Bills a month ago in Buffalo, are rat ed 5-point favorites largely on the strength of their fine 4-1-1 home mark. The Chargers are favored by 7ft over Houston. Other Tiffs In other AFL contests, the Oakland Raiders are 3 point choices over the Broncos in Denver, and the Kansas City Chiefs are a slim 1 point pick over the host New York Jets. The Buffalo-Boston encounter matches two conflicting styles of play. The Bills rank first in the league's passing statistics and second in overall offense while the Patriots offer the AFL's finest defense. The San Diego-Houston test draws most of its attraction from the expected quarterback duel between the league's "old men," the Chargers' Tobin Rote and the Oilers' George Blanda. Sunday's game could well be a championship preview. Woods, Water, Wildlife By Hank DeVois There's a lot of blue smoke in the air now in southern Ore gon, and unless the Game Com mission relents on its proposal to close part of the upper Rogue River to salmon fishing it is going to cause a semi-permanent blue smog in this area every spring. It may simplify the salmon snagging problem, but it's doubtful that it will do anything to improve the sports manlike conduct of Southern Oregon salmon fishermen. SINGLE HOOKS There would seem to be some middle ground between the ex treme of allowing huge treble hooks to be used in salmon fish ing, and an almost opposite ex treme of closing the river above Elk Creek to all salmon fishing. To allow the present treble hook law to stay In the books, which allows a hook measuring t of an inch from the point of the hook to the shank, will do noth ing to improve the fishing skill or sportsmanlike attitude of the fisherman. To close the river above Elk Creek cuts off some of the most beautiful fishing and boating water a person can ex perience, and also does not do anything to Improve the fishing manners of those who fish. CHALLENGE Those who are advocating a change of the law to forbid the use of a treble hook in the main stem of the Rogue River above Pierce riffle would appear to be in the position of being for something to challenge the sportsmenlike conduct o( tne fishermen, be they after trout or salmon. Restricting the hook use to a solitary, single hook measuring less than Vt of an inch from point to shank is not going to make fishing more dif ficult except to those who don't care where they hook a fish. Even a single hook can snag a fish without any effort on the part of the fisherman to do any snagging, but the odds are pretty strong in the favor of a fish being hooked fair. A point strongly in favor of the single hook is that a fish hooked with a single hook doesn't have the leverage to throw the hook as easily as it docs with the treble. SUCCESS There are plenty of fishermen In this area who have caught almost all of their salmon and stcelhrad on single hooks. This Is a successful method that can be accomplished with hooks as Tru-Mix Concrete For Industry jSt Around the Home cJ.,7L,ll.,,, J if On the Farm 238 ua MeAndr9wi Rd- f MEDFORDt&rfTRIBUNB SPORTS Stage Set Encounter Ducks and By HOWARD APPLEGATE United Press International EUGENE. Ore. (UPI) The stage is set for one whale of an aerial battle here Saturday when Oregon and Oregon State meet for the 67th time in the Far West's oldest football rivalry- Take tne ingredients. Oregon State, in end Vern Burke, has perhaps the finest pass catcher in college tooiDaii. In quarterback Gordon Queen it has a lad whose 16 touchdown tosses this fall surpass all but Turkey Day Mat Card Scheduled One of the biggest wrestling cards ever ' presented in Med ford is on Up for Thanksgiving night, Nov. 28, at Medford armory. Matchmaker Elton Owen has signed Haystack Calhoun, the small as a No. 6 so long as the angler doesn't try to derrick a big fish out of the water because of a fear that it will throw the hook. ' IN THE FUTURE It has been suggested by more than one sportsman and con servationist that it might not be a bad idea to eventually pro hibit the use of treble hooks for any kind of fishing for game fish in the state. With the tre mendous pressure on all kinds of fishing, the use of treble hooks means more fish lost be cause of accidental and inten tional snagging that causes in fection and eventual death. We have plenty of evidence that supports the belief that a single hook may not touch as many fish, as a treble, but the single hook will land more fish that are hooked. THE ANGLER'S LOG The weatherman isn't cooper ating with the kind of news a weekend fisherman likes to hear, but It sounds as though th rivers might have a chance of being In fairly fishable shape for this Saturday and Sunday. An inch or more of rain can put the Rogue out of shape again, and a couple of inches can do it out on the coast. Rogue River Is clearing and should be good for ateelhead from Granta Pass on down. Reports In dicate larfrer-than-average fish, and a fairly big run seems to be in the river. Single eggs ought to be a good bet wherever the fall chlnook are aoawnina. Smith River Had one of the biggest and best weeks for salmon last week. Limits were quile com mon, and many of the fish were in the 30 to 40-pound size. The first ateelhead have been caught. Happy days are here again! Berry has overcome Oregon marks of 13 touchdown aerials in a season set by Norm Van Brocklin in 1947 and of 1,358 passing yards set by George Shaw in 1954. Berry has 14 TD passes and 1,426 yards through the air this year, although he missed one game with an in jury. Keniro was an All-America last season and recovered enough from a broken rib to play one of his finest games against Indiana last week. There isn't a phase of football in which the senior halfback dosn't excel. Oregon is rated a five point favorite on tne basis of a 6-3 season mark to 5-4 for Oregon State and the fact it is playing at home. But the Webfoots haven't beaten the Beavers since 1958 when they won 20-0 at Corvallis. Since then Oregon State has won three and there was a 14-14 tie in 1960. Showdown battles occur in the Big Ten and Big Eight con ferences, where the Rose and Orange bowl invitations abound. Fifth-ranked Michigan State and Illinois (No. 8) bring iden tical 6-1-1 records into their Big Ten championship brawl. The Spartans rate six-point choices to beat visiting 'Illinois at East Lansing, Mich., and earn the Rose Bowl representation. A tie also would provide a Rose clincher for Michigan State. Sixth-ranked Oklahoma meets ninth-rated Nebraska at Lin coln, Neb., for the trip to the Miami, Fla., Orange classic. The Sooners are favored by 3 '4 points as both teams place un blemished conference records on the line. The loser probably will be invited to another bowl game. Pittsburgh Front Runner Pittsburgh, a powerful inde pendent and ranked fourth in the country, is a front-runner for the other Orange Bowl slot. The Panthers host Penn State, which can earn a Gator Bowl bid with a good performance. Pittsburgh is a 6Vi point choice. On the West Coast, Washing ton can sew up the host spot in the Rose Bowl by defeating Washington State for the Big Six championship. The Huskies rate a 14-point pick. Should Washington falter, the winner of the UCLA-Southern California game at Los Angeles could come up smelling roses. Southern Cal won this one, 14-3, last year and is a 13V4 point choice to repeat. Auburn, ranked 10th and the only other team in the elite field to see action Saturday, also has an eye toward Gator Bowl activity. A Tiger mauline of Florida State would add mo mentum for the push toward a Jacksonville, Fla. post-season date. The Bluebonnet Bowl at Houston, Tex. and the Tanger ine at Orlando, Fla., will be casting for high runners-up in conference standings and major independents that are over looked elsewhere. The 67th meeting of Oregon and Oregon State could provide a bowl entry. Oregon is rated a five point favorite for the game at Eugene.
