Hammer was elect ed secretary of California-Pacif ic Utilities Company in 1959, after serving a short term as assistant secretary. He joined the company when it was formed in 1938 as pur chasing agent and assistant treasurer, a position he held in the Republic Electric Pow er Corporation. Hammer joined the Republic Electric Power Corporation in 1930 as a stnographer and pur chasing agent. Prior to that time he was with the Union Pa cific and Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Com panies in Salt Lake City. He was born in Salt Lake City in 1897, and was graduated from high school there. Hammer serv ed as chief mechanic, artillery, -- jj''' WALTER E. Natural gas was turned on into Medford and Phoenix gas mains Monday, and California Pacific Utilities Company serv icemen started checking resi dential appliances lor proper operation. Company officials said serv icing the appliances would take several days, and no charge would be levied for checking appliances for proper operation. Natural gas into Southern Oregon started a few months aco when a 10-inch transmission pipeline was extended from Eu gene to Grants Pass by El Paso Natural Gas Company. At the same time, a pipeline was ex tended from Grants Pass to Ashland by California-Pacific Utilities Company. Gas Now Available Natural gas is now available in the latter line at 300 pounds per square inch. The pressure Is further re duced at the plant in Medford to S pounds and injected into the distribution main system of the city, company officials not ed. The pressure is finally re duced to one-quarter of a pound at each customer's meter for proper burner operation at the appliance. A second feeder pipeline con nects to the transmission line on Old Stage Road at Happy Valley Drive and extends north on Peach Street to Stewart Av enue and east to connect to the distribution mains at Barnctt Road and South Riverside Av enue, company officials added. - Natural gas was first inject ed into the feeder lines early last Friday morning. Each cus tomer was contacted that day and the following day by a gas serviceman who made an ad justment on the air mixture for each appliance. as customers living in Phoe nix and along U.S. 99 to Phoe nix were handled at the same time. The natural gas turn-in was completed in Grants Pass, Talent and Ashland earlier in the week. Educated in the Willamette Valley and Port land, Ore., he was employed by Eastern Oregon Light and Power Company, a predeces sor company CPU at Baker, Ore. He was appointed purchas ing agent in 1938. After Navy duty, he was transferred to the San Francisco office as pur chasing agent, a position he held until March this year, when he moved to Medford as division manager. Gas, Rate Engineer IS Ex-California PUC Staff Member Lloyd E. Cooper, who joined the California-Pacific Utilities Company in 1954, is in charge of all operating and engineer ing work for the company, a position to wnicn he was named in 1960. He joined the utilities firm as gas and rate engineer, re signing from a position with the California Public Utilities Commission. As gas and rate engineer he was responsible tor engineering and operating problems in con nection with the company's en tire gas operations and all mat ters pertaining to rates for all departments. In April, 1957, he was elected vice president with added responsibilities for ncgo tiatlngs in connection with pur chased power and purchased gas rates. Born In California Cooper was born in Auburn, Calif., and attended schools in Roseville, Calif. He was grad uated from Stanford University in 1924 with a degree of bachelor of arts in mechanical engineer ing. COOPER Gas, Rate Engineer years in construction and main tenance work in the electrical department of the municipal system in Roseville. He was employed by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company in their general office in San Francisco in the valuation department. From 1937 to 1954, Cooper de voted his time to work on the engineering staff of the Public Utilities Commission of Califor nia. The latter 10 years of the period were as gas supervising engineer in charge of activities of the gas section covering all matters relating to the opera lions, rate proceedings, and safety of operation of all gas utilities operating in California under the commission's jurisdic tion. It ?PR COMMERCIAL MANAGER - E. R. Hoppe, division commer cial manager for California Pacific Utilities Company, has almost 34 years experience in the gas industry. He joined the Nebraska Natural Gas Distrib uting Company in 1929 as man agcr - salesman and remained there until 1933. He was em ployed by the Interstate Power company at uwatonna, Minn., and the Northwestern Public Service Company at Aberdeen, S. D., before moving to Med ford in 1939. He was division sales manager when he first came to Medford. In 1954, ' Hoppe was named district man ager of the Medford district. and named division commerical manager Feb. 1 this year. , Three Accidents Reported in City Three non-injury auto colli sions were reported to Medford City Police Monday. Citations were issued in two. An auto-parked vehicle colli sion occurred on Front Street and Central Avenue when a car driven by Samuel David Cook, Grants Pass, struck a parked car owned by Ronald Everett Lehman, 3345 Bellinger Koaa, Medford. William Ormand Shoemaker, Springfield, and Lynne Alice McClurg, 1310 E. 10th St., Med ford, were drivers of cars that collided at Ninth Street and Central Avenue. Shoemaker was cited for improper passing on the right side, police said. Cars registered to Michael Paul Smeltzer, 1432 E. Main St., Medford, and Alvera May Mer torr, 1820 Kings Highway, were drivers of cars in an auto-parked auto collision. Merlon was cited for violation of the basic rule. The collision occurred at 913 King St., Medford, police reported. Survey Shows Cost of Commuting by Auto CHEAPER BY RAIL NEW YORK (UPI)-A New Haven Railroad survey has com puted the cost of driving a low priced car from Mamaroneck, N.Y., to Manhattan at $1,500 a year. The cost of commuting the same distance daily by rail is $262.80 a year, the railroad said. Medford and lis outskirts not previously served.
