A better simile could hardly have been found for the mouse, with the possible excep tion of the famous "Mickey," as symbolic of the profoundest depths of gentleness of any creature known to exist in this often hostile world. It would necessitate a very ex haustive search indeed, to find any authentic record of a man ever being actually attacked by a mouse, ut course it would be pretty despicable human that would admit it anyway, but the nature of this little rodent would pretty well preclude any such possibility. It should be a source of great satisfaction to the entire mouse tribe if they could know that there are some rather silly people that are actually afraid of mice; a meager reward, but at least it's a little something on the debit side for mousedom. Feels Pride ton, the mouse. It he ever heard about it and probably he has, must feel a flush of pride because so many uninformed folks believe the silly supersti tion that an elephant, the larg est land animal on this earth, is afraid of one little mouse. It's not true of course, but some folks by not knowing, credit the mouse with a quality he cannot possess; tor that the little ro dent gains a thin shred of respect. A very wise man bv the name of Sclden once said, and he probably didn't have a mouse in mind either, that "hu mility is a virtue all preach, none practice." The saying ap plies to mankind but certainly not to mice for this little animal Is the epitome of abject humili ty. Abject Terror Any mouse, the common va riety, those that live in church es, the ones that occupy a small space in a meadow or forest must live in abject terror all its life. Fear must be its constant companion. .lust about every other crea ture in all creation, including man himself, is an ever present enemy. There is never a time, day or night, when it can sleep, eat, or rest without a feeling of uneasiness; the specter of sudden death haunts its every living moment. "The meek shall inherit the earth," certainly doesn't apply to mice; it's even doubtful it it applies to man cither; it's doubtful if the very meek will inherit much of anything. Even if they did, the aggressive ones would take it awav from them and they would be right back again, more frightened, more submissive, than before. In mouse-society, it is necessary to always nide and run. The best they can hope for are a few days or weeks before the final curtain. Even a mouse that tried to be hravc would quickly become a statistic and unrecord ed at that. Yes, the question, "Arc you a man or a mouse?" supposedly implies extreme bravery and aggressiveness and abject meekness and timidity; but with every hand, every claw, talon and tooth against it, the mouse has every reason to be deathly alraid ot anything and every thing that moves.
