Higher Education Asked To Outline Cuts in Budget - SALEM (UPU) A demand that the Board of higher Edu cation outline in detail where it plans to make $6.1 million in budget cuts was voiced today in the Ways and Means Committee by Rep. Lieuallen appeared before the pre-session meeting, of Ways and Means last week and outlined where higher education might make cuts, and explained plans to in crease entrance requirements, una uuusi tuiuon tees. But it was broueht out that the Board of Higher Education had not yet take Jiany positive acuon, ana aia not plan to f.n so until the special session of the legislature ended. Hansell said: "I'm afraid we'll adjourn without getting any idea what higher education will do. They will stall if they can, but we can press them to act now it we put the pressure on." Co-chairman Sen. Ward Cook. D-Portland, Warned: "the timo is coming when a closer tie be tween the Board of Higher Edu cation and the legislature is go ing to result. "I don't question the dedica tion of board members, but they are getting a long way from the people they serve. "These are public schools," he said as he blasted proposals to increase tuition and entrance requirements. "We are not getting the coop eration we should have under the procedures and policies set by the board so far," Cook add ed. Hansell said he wanted to know what higher education planned to do before he went home from the special session. "I don t want the decisions made after it is too lake for us to do anything abot them," he snapped. Police Supervise Search ol Garbage WINSTON - SALEM, N. C. (UP1) Donald Tison Davis re sumes the tedious task today ol sifting through tons ot garbage in search of the S4Z0 ne allegedly stole from a cafeteria. Police said Tuesday the 18-year-old busboy admitted taking the money last weanesaay ana hiding il in a garbage can at the Reynolds Manor Cafeteria where he worked. When he returned to pick up the cash Thursday, he found the can had been emptied. He was arrested Monday. Police have agreed to let Da vis search for the loot. He start ed Wednesday morning under nnlice surjervision at a snrbage dump where 320,000 pounds of garbage are dumped daily. Six-Way Wonder!
