She lights out after the tobac co industry and even Uncle Sam, deploring the ostrich pos ture in America where smoking and health are concerned, as she sees it. It has been estimated that this year Uncle Sam will reap more than $2 billion from taxes on tobacco products. The federal tax on a package of cig arettes is eight cents.- In New York City, cigarettes cost around 35 cents a pack. The Tobacco Institute reported mat were s a live cent state tax and a four cent city tax. in addition to the federal one, making 17 cents in taxes. Rog ers, mayor of Bend in 1958 and the city's outstanding senior cit izen in 1955, died Wednesday following a long illness. He was 64. Rogers was a native of Lu vcrne, Minn. . . He was a partner In the oper ation of Cascade Forest Pro ducts, Bend, prior to his illness. He was a leader in Bend's civic activities and a member of the Bend City Commission for three years. Rogers was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his widow, Jean, and a daughter, Mrs. Lo rcna Hubbs, both of Bend. .
