Watching is William Jones, University of Oregon official and present governor of the district. (Knackstedt Photo) Rotary is a- great fellowship of the human family in which men of all creeds, colors and nationalities meet on common ground and are given the op portunity to build for a "Good Life." ' This was the keynote of an address here Tuesday by Wil liam Jones, University of Ore gon official and governor of District 511, Rotary, Interna tional. Jones spoke before the Medford Rotary Club at the Rogue Valley Country Club at a meeting observing the 40th anniversary of the loral 'club organized in 1923 with the help of Portland Rotarians. , The speaker recalled the days before recent technological ad vances were made and pointed out that many people have a nostalgia for the simple days when machines did not perform almost everything except to make business decisions. The popularity of "westerns" in novel form and on television is probably a manifestation of this feeling, he observed. Building Their Future It was in the era of ancient Greece when men first had a part in building their own fu ture and held the hope of ulti mately achieving the "Good Life," the educator told Rotari ans. This "Good Life" is not just achieving economic securi ty, not just enjoying pnysical health or moral stature and emotional equilibrium. It is, Jones emphasized, a man coming to terms with him self, the banishing of fear of words and ideas. It is coming to terms with a man's fellowman and with the personality of God Loren Palmerton, former dis trict governor of Rotary District 511 presented th Medford club a plaque designating the club as the outstanding one of the district during the year 1961-62 when Dr. Ray McNair was pres ident. This award cannot be won in consecutive years. Three Other Governors Three other governors of Ro tary District Sll were present at the anniversary meeting, E, B. Lemon of Corvallis, and Wil liam Caldwell and v. Ward Hammond, both of Medford. Mark A. Holt, dean of the old-time Rotarians, and John Moffat were not present, Those introduced by Goldy were John Boyle, Roland Hubbard, Morris B. Leonard, Sr., Dr. S. Ralph Dippel. But, the Army has spent more than $1.2 bil lion on development of the Nike-Zeus anti-missile missile that it claims will be able to do the job. Only a few days after Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's "fly in the sky" statement in June, 1962, the Army success fully intercepted over the bouth Pacific the nose cone of an Air Force intercontinental ballistic missile with its 48-foot Nike Zeus. It has made several in terceptions since then, but the system still has not been fully developed. i President Kennedy, at an Au gust news conference this year, said "the problem of develop ing a defense against a missile is beyond us and beyond the So viets technically." - However, Kennedy said that work would continue on the problem, "but I must say those who work the longest are not particularly optimistic that a scientific breakthrough can be made." The basic problem is to devel op an anti-missile missile which can differentiate between a nu clear missile and a decoy. The Army maintains that the mis sile can detect the real thing because the size and weight of a nuclear warhead is different from a decoy. . .'ilN M. The council was holding its first meeting in history outside of Washington, D. C, for the specific purpose of studying the project, which covers all of Malheur County and parts of Grant and Karncy counties. The last formal action before adjournment came Tuesday night, when the council ap proved a recommendation that stockmen be paid if they lose their grazing permits on public land. The 44-membcr council passed the proposal in an executive ses sion despite warnings the stock men would be accused of a "land grab." Informed sources said the vote was 24 to 7, with the others abstaining. Stockmen maintained that un less they have assurance they will not lose their range or are compensated for the loss, they cannot make improvements that would lead to better grazing.
