EVERY WEEK there's good trading in FAMILY WEEKLY irr-r' Dr. James Berbos delivered the quints. QUINTS ( Continued from page 5) same. They weren't weighed or cleaned up when they came from the delivery room. They were put into the isolettes immedi ately. Dr. Berboa said he thought their weights would range from 2V4 pounds to 4 pounds. This turned out to be a very accurate prediction. While the babie3 were being delivered, the anesthetist kept a record of their birth times and manner of delivery on a cloth sheet in the delivery room. Later, Mrs. Marguerite Dorman, supervisor of the maternity floor, made copies for each of us. There were about 14 people involved in the delivery and nursery work that morning. After the delivery, Mrs. Fischer was exhausted. A nursing sister and I stayed with her to make sure she had absolute rest. She slept during the morning and by noon was more her usual self. It was about that time that flowers and tele grams (including one from President Kennedy) began arriving and she was able to appreciate them. Later that day, I acted as one of the sponsors when the Most Rev. Lambert A. Hoch, the Roman Catholic bishop of Sioux Falls, baptized the babies. The evening after the . delivery, Mrs. Fischer went to the nursery in a wheel chair to see the babies. She was given ambulatory privileges the same night. Hers has been a good, normal recovery despite the fact that she had given birth to five babies. In her hospital room she was sheltered from most of the public excitement about the quints. She did attend a news con ference the next Tuesday. I think it took her a couple of days to realize the situ ation fully. The Fischers impress me as a very close-knit family. Mr. and Mrs. Fischer are steady people, and I think their fam ily is the most important thing in their lives. I am certain they will make every effort to give their children all of them a normal life. Mr. Fischer told me he hoped the fam ily could continue to enjoy the good life they had. This family life is something very precious to him. A day or two after the births, he was asked whether he might leave his farm home for a city home. He replied that he had chosen where they live to give his children a good place to grow up. Mrs. Fischer is shy and reserved. When she talked in the hospital, it was about her children. She missed her five older ones at home, and she was anxious to see the quints and expressed concern for their well-being. She is, I think, worried about the enor mous responsibility of the new life she and her family face. But in spite of her concern, I am sure she will be able to cope with whatever the future may bring.
