Tornadoes 42-7jn Conference Triumph Sets Up Championship Tiff With GP on SOUTHKftV IWIAnu CONFBRISNCE 8TAVD1NQS 3 " Mford 3 o 1.000 Crater 1 a rn Klamath Falls .'.1 3 250 Ashland 0 3 .000 There's a perennial pattern in Southern Oregon conference football. Again, in 1963 the chase has followed to the form. And, Grants Pass and Medford High Schools will battle in a league unaie wnicn win aecide the race. Medford's Black Tornado and the Cavemen of Grants Pass run together in the champion ship conflict next Friday, Nov. 8, at the Medford Stadium. Props and backdrop for the concluding act of this season's District 6 A-l gridiron drama were set here Friday night after the Medford Hurricane blew aside the upset hopes of the Ashland Grizzlies 42-7. Outcome pulled the Tornadoes even, at 3-0 with the Cavemen in the conference standings. Vowcll Goes 80 Larry Vowell touchdowned on an 80-yard punt return, threw one touchdown pass and caught another and had a 75-yard jaunt to the goal called back as the Medfords reach the pay zone in every period. Bill Enyart also boomed to the end zone twice for Medford. Steve Toews and Greg Gandee got the other scores. Jack Mullen flung a TD pass. Bill Collins, doing his first varsity extra point kicking for the Tornado, cleared the cross bar and split the uprights on each of his six tries. Mike Torresan tabulated for the Bruins on a left end romp in the final minutes of the game and caught a pass from Dave Lohman for the bonus tally. . Medford had 21-0, 28-0 and 35-0 period margins. It was a down hill rumble for the Tornado in the second half as a host of gridders got into the game. Barnes Runs 59 The Big Wind capitalized for touchdowns on its first three chances with the ball and Mike Barnes got the triumph motion going with a 59-yard opening kickoff return deep into Ash land territory. Wyatt Intercepts Only twice did the Grizzlies get real drives going. They scored on the second one. A Curt Wyatt pass interception stopped the other in the second quarter. Yardage statistics were in Medford's favor with 293 net from scrimmage to Ashland's 168. First Tornado TD was on a two yard leap by Enyart. Then, Gandee sliced over the left side of the line, cut right and broke away for a 40-yard goalward run. A Vowell lefthanded aerial to Toews for 29 yards brought touchdown No. 3. Vowell's 80 yard scamper was the next scoring play. He broke loose up the middle and just ran away. This run followed by two series of downs the 75-yarder which was nullified. Enyart cracked scant inches for the third quarter marker after an Ashland fumble set the stage. In the closing quar ter a Mullen pass to Vowell in the right flat paid off for 34 yards and a score. Second Chance Barnes' long sprint came on Medford's second chance to run the kickoff. The Tornado quar terback had run back just 18 yards to the Tornado 32-yard line on Ken Preston's first thump for Ashland. The Griz zlies were penalized for offside and kicked again. Barnes took the ball on the Medford 15 and blasted up the field again. Tor resan finally hauled him down 26 yards from the Ashland goal. Jackson 772-1047 Overrun Tim Murray and Gandee pack ing, Medford had a score. En yart dove over the middle for uie last two yards. Medford took over on its own 46 after Ashland failed tn eel first down on its first series with the ball. Murray and En yart each made three yards and Barnes passed to Murray for 11. Murray was dropped for a three-yard loss oh the Ashland 37. Then, the Whirlwind shook Gandee by the line on his scor ing play. Vowell to Toews Ashland's three plays netted zero and Roger Atherton punted a second time. Medford took possession with Vowell's nine yard runback to the Tornado 42. Ifl five plays the Tornado had another score. Gandee was stopped for no gain but Enyart crashed for five yards. An officials' pass inter ference ruling gave Medford 15 yards and first down on the Ash land 36. Enyart gained to the 29. From there Vowell passed to Toews who was wide open for the ball. Ashland fumbled on its two just one play after the second half kickoff. Medford was called for offside and set back to its seven. Murray got the five yards back immediately. Enyart bombed to just inches for the pay line and crossed it on the next try. A Grizzly muff and recovery of the ball by Ron Wallace got Medford on the way to its final counter. That gave Medford the ball on its 47 and the end zone was reached in six plays. Mullen to Vowell Lance Cascbeer made two yards and Dana Thurman one. Mullen passed to Vowell for 20 yards to the 30. Thurman gained another yard but Mullen lost five on a fumble. Then, Mullen passed to Vowell again and the receiver maneuvered to the goal. Only the halftime horn, prob ably, prevented another Med ford tally. With Wyatt running for 12 yards and with Mullen completing four of five passes, two each to Mullen and Vowell, the Tornado whizzed from its 47-yard line to the Ashland four. Ashland drove directly to its touchdown right after the last Medford marker. Dennis Ekwall ran for 21 yards around end on Medford-GP Game Tickets To Go On Sale Reserved seat and general admission tickets for the Med ford Grants Pass High football game will be on sale at the senior high activities office starting at 7 a.m. on Monday. Tor resan swept end for 10 yards to the Medford 25. Lohman sneaked for four. Then, fine deception by the Grizzlies paid off. Gruber faked smartly into the line and Torre san, sweeping left end raced to the TD stripe. On the conversion play Lohman bobbled the snap irom center, Dut wnen ne con trolled the ball and looked, Tor resan was all alone in the right area of the end zone. An easy pass got tne extra point. The Bruins came close to a score in the waning moments. They got the ball on the Med ford 35 on a short punt by Wy att. A pass, Lohman to Ekwall put the ball on the 24. Lohman threw to Atherton past the goal line but the receiver caught the ball out of bounds to the right. Another Lohman heave, which looked like a sure TD bounced off of Torresan's arm. Mullen 6 of 7 Ashland pushed from its 29 to the Medford 36 in four plays in the late second quartor with Ekwall racing for 16 yards. This is where Wyatt's interception wrecked the bid. Mullen completed six of seven passes for 91 yards for Medford and Vowell had four catches for 67 yards. Tim Watrud, like Wy att, intercepted an Ashland pass. Jim Conklin had a pass interception for the Grizzlies. Two of Dane Smith's kickoffs for Medford went into the end zone. Another was picked up on the one-yard line. statistics .. , . u. Med. Ash.
