THURSDAY. Ut'TMKER 31. 1063 MKDrORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON '1.. Family Council Edltor'i Note: The Famllv Coun. rll consltti ot a judge. a psychia tric, three clergymen, a newspaper editor, a wmirn'i editor, and two wrlterf, fcacn article Is a uimmary of an actual case history. The Council reports on problems ihat have heen dealt with hv respon sible asencles and counselor!. (CopvrlBht 1963 General Feature! Corp.) Nathan T. At 74 he wants to leave New York and settle out West alone. Mr. G. T. I might as well be alone in a better climate and nicer home. Nathan T. My father took a charter (light tour to Cali fornia last summer and fell in love with the place. He's in good health living in a furnished room in Brooklyn near me and other family members, but he says he wants to knock over his traces, leave us and his cronies, and set up residence in Mon- terey. He's going cold, knows no one out there. If anything happened, who'd help? Mr. G. T. Judging from Na than's talk you'd think 1 saw him often. On the contrary, it's only a few times a year say every other month and only for a short visit. I'm sound of body, limb, wind and mind and I yearn to get back to that California sun and gorgeous scenery. I can make friends and get settled. Whatever might happen to me here can happen there. I'll only be seven hours away from my son by jet. The Council: Some fathers are incorrigible, Nathan! We've just heard of a 90-year-old who s looking for a town with a "fu ture," and of a 95-year-old who signed a five-year lease. (See "A Full Life After 65," a book let by Edith M. Stern.) ... The only valid drawback here is Mr. T.'s lack of preparation for the change. We advise him to post pone his departure slightly, not indefinitely. In the interim, he should communicate with the local Family Service Associa tion, or his religious organiza tion, so that with his family he can select a few likely sounding residences to follow up by mail or phone. There are retirement hotels, special apartments for the elderly, sheltered commu nity arrangements. Assured that he's comfortable, his son should have no strong demur rer. Nowadays it's family feel ing, not proximity alone, which offers security. Nathan can beam it coast-to-coast, we hope, offers security. Grange News Phoenix Grange "Booster Night" at Phoenix Grange was well attended. A potluck dinner was held before the meeting. Lecturer Mrs. Lester Carr in troduced Mclvin Lattie, legis lative chairman, who was in charge of the program. He spoke on the purposes and ac complishments of the Grange. He introduced speakers for the evening. Sen. Lynn Newbry and Rep. John Dcllcnback. Newbry gave his views con cerning the past tax bill and explained why it was handled as it was. He favors a sales tax as a means of added reven ue. Dellenbcck encouraged writ ing letters to legislators to tell why they gave a no vote and to offer their suggestions on the tax problem. He explained what is meant by basic school sup port. Both men said there will be economies practised at the spe cial session in November. They answered questions asked from the audience. Grange members are remind ed that the next meeting will start at 8 p.m. Nov. 12. ftlMr&SkbAm K K Mint J-S rrBew iTOtVW" - ' " . ?.. WASHINGTON (Ul'I) - The fact that an attractive young German woman was forced to return home because of her alleged friendship with unnam ed officials here is of little in terest to me. What I find intriguing is the manner in which the matter came to light. According to a repoit I have been reading with beady little eyes, the State Departmnt be came suspicious of her conduct because she was "dressing be yond her means." Presumably, her clothing was more expensive than the wife of a German sergeant would or dinarily be able to buy. This strikes me as being a rather slim reed upon which to base an investigation. My own wife, for instance, has been dressing beyond her means for years. Or at least beyond my means. But as far as I know she has never cau.sed an eyebrow-lifting at the State Department. Who's In Charge? If buying dresses that their husbands can't afford is a sign that women are less than vir tuous, then there must be a terrific traffic jam along the path. What I would like to know is this: Who at the State Depart ment ha3 charge of noticing that women arc dressing beyond their means? And how do you go about getting a job jfke that? Much of the social life in Washington revolves around the embassy circuit. The dress inspector therefore must be' a pretty busy fellow. Publicity that the Ellen Ho metsch case has been getting. coming on top of the Christine Kecler case in London, un doubtedly will make his work a lot harder. If I were a socialite. I would be sure I wore last year's dress me next tune I attended a party on Embassy How. Would He Suspect Ladies attending these func tions probably will find it more difficult from now on to main tain their composure when they spot some guy giving them the once-over. It would well be. ot course, that the State Department's aw. n In the. iu ta rriw.iu. -TO TO1 successful I'm making it a Dressing Beyond Means Not Uncommon dress inspector is a woman. That would permit the inspec tor to feel the quality of the dry goods without risking a punch in the nose. Or it could be that the de partment uses a two-man in spection team, one being a fashion expert and the other an accountant. As for us husbands, the case suggests a rule of thumb that we can follow. As long as our wives' clothing keeps us broke, we can be fairly certain they are being faithful. LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF SALK NOTICE IS HERE BY GIVEN lhal on the 29th day of Novem ber.
