Most agree that uie crow is a preiiy gmari oper ator. Owning a pet crow gives the owner an insight into crow behavior that is often rather surprising. The student of nird behavior, usually viewing the subject imnnrlinllv is fr. quently amazed at what these isungiess Diras seem to know. Th pnmhinpH nnininn nt all however, is that the common :row is reasonaoiy nigh in IQ. jib eai iy aaopis in, "1 - won I believe - it until - I see - it" attitude. Even after the ac cumulated mass of data is be fore him and is mulled over, he admits there are many perti nent questions still without a satisfactory Answer hut oaa that he is dealing with some remarttaDie ana astonishing ing birds. Clannish Creatures The survival pattern of the crow clan, is phenomenal. They have survived And inrrpnQp4 in numbers mainly because their uutauuy aoimy 10 lane care of themselves. Being exceedingly clannish creatures, they almost knock themselves out helping one another. The "all for one and one for all" formula finds fulfillment in crow society. Among themselves crows are mischievous to the point of be ing actually pests, often driving some of their fellow flock-males almost to distraction. Yet they readily forgive their friends if the trick backfires and will try desperately to repeat the trick on some other crow. Toward one another they hold no grudge. To forgive and forget, to the crow, is a virtue. Knowing that pet crows pos sess what amounts to an obses sion in thievery, we decided to concentrate on this facet of crow behavior in observing a large rookery that we had under observation with binoculars. We had constructed a blind but. it is doubtful if we fooled the birds by it. They early found that we meant them no harm so pro ceeded on their daily activities as if we were not present. Odd Possession Daily we watched individual birds come to their nest with some object, aside from food, in their bills. Usually the ob jects were shiny. We saw spoons, flashlight bulbs, sea shells, small, odd shaped stones, and a wide assortment of odds and ends that appealed to the bird's sense of possession. We noticed too, what happen ed when some other bird, aside from the real owner of one of these treasures, decided to steal from his neighbor. He would wan unui uie owner was away, then swoop down onto the nest, Crab the nnVi nnH m. away Some of the birds would yauui careiuily. When the owner of the nest re turned, he often noticed the ar ticle was missing. He would know what to do; up into the air e wuwa go ana look over the other nests and storage spots If he found what he was looking for, he would steal it back. At the same tiwie he would usually take somethit g else. Even if caught in the act, there seemed to be no hard feelings. He might set up a holler for a while, bul m the end he forgave the trans gression. By a broad interpretation the moral oi crow society would seem to be "send a thief to catch a thief or, "to err is crow-like, but to forgive is di vine."
