MEDKOKD MAIL TKIBINE. MKUFOlil). ORECiON Sport Parade By JACK CUDDY United Press International NEW YORK (UPI) - Yogi Berra's first objective as new manager of the New York Yankees will be to restore their old trade mark the home run. "Personnel seems to run in cycles with teams," says Berra, who has been observing Yankee teams since 1947 when he re ported as the rawest rookie Ring Lardner's Alibi Ike. "And for a while it has been running toward fielding and finesse with us." Berra was appalled when the Yankees scored only four runs in their four-game World Series sweep at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. "They had great pitching," he conceded. "But we had lousy hitting. We're supposed to hit great pitching." The Yankees lost to the Dodg ers by scores of 5-2, 4-1, 1-0, and 2-1 the worst showing they ever made in a World Series SOMETHING NEW Has Been Added Bob Lewis IS BACK AS OUR SERVICE MANAGER In addition to our regu lar mechanical service in Domestic & Imported Cars we are now equipt to work on . . . Looks For Muscle "The first thing I'm going to iook tor is some more muscle, said Yogi, in going over his fu ture plans. "The Yankees mean ; power to people. I want to add some power left-handed if pos- j sible but right handed if I can't ! get left-handed power-hitting." j The Yankees hit 188 homers i last season a king-sized total but they were far behind the American and major league ' leading total of 225 hit by the j Minnesota Twins. ; "They were calling the Twins j the window breakers at the end of the season," grumbles Berra. j "We're supposed to be the win dow breakers." Injuries to Mickey Mantle and j Roger Maris cut down on Yank ee homers, of course, but Ber ra doesn't see that as an ex cuse. He feels the team he has inherited from Ralph Houk is built basically on defense and he thinks a Yankee team should be built basically on power. Needs Power Hitters "We always had good field ing," recalls Yogi of the Great l i anKee teams oi me isou s. But we had the big sticks. The Trojans are the defensive kings, having given up only 242 yards per game. Their pass de fense is among the nation's i best, having yielded a scant fil yards per contest. Washington has the best at tack with 321 yards per game and has rushed for 225 yards per contest to lead that depart ment, too. The Huskies also have given up 194 yards per game rushing, lowest in the league. California, with quarterback Craig Morton leading the way, has the best pass offense with an average of 158 yards per contest. A full team of five runners must finish the race in order for the team to score. SOC's Rich Stanfield stepped in a hole and sprained his ankle in the first mile and was unable to go the route. Sacramento State College won the meet with 45 points. Chico State was second with 53. Red Raiders who placed in the four mile event were Norm Oyler, first: Jerry Arndt 11th; Allan Wruck, 18th; Jack Salter, 21st. Josephine County librar ian, described the early plan ning done by city and county before the new library was con structed. The city of Ashland has pur chased two additional lots ad jacent to the present library for expansion. A feasibility study was made by Vincent L. Ored son, architect, who was retained by the city. This study has been accepted and the architect has now been asked to bring in a preliminary plan for the new building. 1U.500 Square Feel If the construction develops as now visualized. Miss Mason said, the Ashland library will have 19.500 square feet of use space. The building which will be attached to the present li brary will add 10,000 square feet tc the facility. Some of the probems which now exist at the Ashland Li brary, and are to be corrected in the new construction, are too many steps, inefficient arrange ment of work and study areas, and inadequate parking space. Miss Mason said. The new structure will have a graduated ramp as approach and entrance to the building, which will have one major floor with surrounding mezza nine, and parking on the root. The old building will he used as the auditorium and children's department.
