Mrs. Corrine Kane's room held a class election recently. Offi cers elected are: Pamela Moore, president; Gary Wade, vice president; and Valerie cagby, secretary-treasurer. Sheriff's Deputy Buford John son came to Griffin Creek School to discuss safety recently. Mrs. Harriett Eitemiller's sixth grade class is planning an exhibition of Mexican articles late in October. Mexico is the first foreign country we will study this year. Students will bring articles from home that were made in Mexico, inis ex hibit will be held in the library. We are also making a bulletin board in our room. Students are bringing pictures of Mexico to place on the board. The fifth grade studied about Columbus and are now learning how the colonists won their in dependence. We are making re ports on important people. In the back of the room there is a news bulletin board. Each morning we bring news to share. Mrs. Corrine Kane's music classes are making reports on composers. Our first composer was Mozart. Uur second report will be on Sousa. The next re port will be on Foster. In Maurice Nelson's fourth grade geography class, we have made a few maps of Washing ton, Idaho, and Oregon. In art, Nelson's room is mak ing paper-mache puppets about Halloween. In Mrs. Maurice Lindsay's third grade physical education ciass we are taking fitness tests and also are doing self-testing activities such as ball handling, chinning, crossing the cat-walk, and standing broad jumps. In music class we have re viewed many of the things we learned in second grade about the staff and kinds of notes. Mrs. Lindsay's room was proud of their contribution to the American Junior Red Cross. Students collected $2.54. Many Monarch caterpillars and chrysalises have been brought into the second grade classes of Mrs. Dorothy Tollef- son and Mrs. Edith Arnold Some of them were found on the school grounds. We viewed the film "The Mon arch Butterfly." Many of our questions concerning the Mon arch were answered while watching the film. We also studied different kinds of leaves under the magnifying glass. We have 21 boys and girls in Mrs. Ethel Cummings' first grade. We are learning to use our "thinkers." We use our eyes and ears and then slop to think. We had a pet show in our room. Pupils brought live pets and some brought stuffed toy animals. Colleen Shcile and Donna Lew is brought guinea pigs; Tracy Reich brought his black puppy; Ron Lucich and Debbie Cofteen brought turtles; Stanley Brooks brought cuppies; and lorn Haer- tie brought a snapping turtle, and a rabbit. Shoplifter Receives Penitentiary Term A Salem man was sentenced to five years in the Oregon Mate Penitentiary this week on a charge of shoplifting. He had pleaded guilty to taking articles from Scars Roe buck and Company store Sept. 20. Sentenced by Circuit Judge Edward C. Kelly was George Henry Schreiber, 57. of 4380 Commercial SE, Salem. Prior to sentencing Judcc Kel ly commented on statements made by District Attorney Alan B. Holmes, calling Schreiber a "professional shoplifter." Records showed that the Sal em man, currently on parole from California for a similar charge, had a history of past shoplifting arrests.
