Our son is 18 and ; plans to run a party tor a tew young couples. It worries me that these Saturday night par ties have included liquor lately. Jack had an accident driving home from one last year, He's . a good driver, but he wasn't sharp after a few drinks, .We refuse to let him drive to such parties now, so he hit upon the idea of having his own, where he'll serve liquor without ub around. I say no. " Jack B. My parents can't make me a hermit. They won't give me the car to go to other people's parties because they're afraid of accidents. It should put their mind at ease for me to have parties at home, but I certainly don't want them around supervising the liquor. They know I drink moderately, in fact, they taught me how. I've had a cocktail before din ner with them since I was a kid it relaxes me. The Council: We of The Coun cil wouldn't want a child of ours to go to Jack's party not if it's run the way he'd like, with liquor flowing free, no parents around to say wnen, and no way to get home except in a car driven by a too gay or too droopy teenager. The emphasis on liquor is alarming, because kids like Jack use it to proclaim themselves "men," to distinguish the ins from the outs of "sophisticated" groups. But all it reveals is weakness. It's a sad start in life for a child to be served alcohol to relax him. But Worse, Jack grew up watching his parents and their guests guzzle freely and he deems it natural to follow suit. At this rate, hotyeverhe may become an alcoholic, judg ing from the effect of his early drinking. Two points ;i Alcohol is not a stimulant or a relaxant, Jack. It's a drug, a sedative, and it stupefies the mind. So forget about driving and drink ing as a combo. Also, a rash ot popular nightclubs for teen ers is sorinRine up all through the land where alcohol is bar red. One in Alhambra, Calif., Is packed to the rafters. The lure is a good band, low prices, nice kids, and soda pop. Washington Said Tied To Gambling WASHINGTON (UPI) - A New York advocate of legalized gambling charged today that "hypocritical officialdom" in Washington state has allied , it self with crime syndicates. The charge was made by Rep. Paul Flno, R-N.Y., in one ot a scries of attacks on states in which he says the illicit gam bling take far exceeds that of legal horse racing. . i. "Washington is another state where hypocritical olticialdom Is a covert ally of the under world," Fino said in a state ment prepared for delivery in the House. Ho seeks to estab lish a government-operated na tional lottery. American Elk Creating Unexpected Problem WAKHIMr.TnW (IlPM Amorl. can elk, once near extinction, j now are creating an unexpected problem overpopulation, re ports the National Geographic Society. Protected herds in Yellow stone and Grand Teton National Parks are growing so fast that browsing areas cannot support them. Park rangers are trap ping and transplanting elk to less populated areas but elk are stubborn and the method is slow and expensive. Rensselaer's Frosh Class Large, Smart TROY, N.Y. (UPI) - Rons sclacr Polytechnic Institute's largest freshman class may be its smartest, too. James F. Newman, director of admissions for the 139-ycar old school, said 80 per cent of the 925 freshmen entering this fall were among the top fifth of their high school graduating classes, and M per cent ranked in the top two-fifths. He said the average student scored 620 in College Entrance Board tests, compared to a national average of 500. COI-ORFUL NEW YORK UPI) - "Nat ural" colors are showing up in more and more building mate rials as designers seek to over come extremes of the gaudy and the pale. Examples are the colors of nature found in wood and the warm, earthy tones of . baked clay and ceramic tiles. a - -a i rr.. : lYrA I TENUIS Snt I I . i I WILT WOHEiTS I 1 W 'tHwS rUSES I PBWTED r 1 I .. 5 99 I 1 SPORTSWEAR I I I I nurmn n irvn I ' C ' ' I ' ' ' ' ' I . &rls capr,i( I Rea. 4.98 " I ; .
