THURSDAY, Fire Claims Late Comedienne's Kin PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (UPI) Four members of the late comedienne Joan Davis family her mother, daughter and two grandsons were killed today when fire swept their home. The victims were Nina Davis, 72, Mrs. Beverly Colbert, 29, and Mrs. Colbert's two sons by a former marriage, Guy Gross man, 7, and Larry, 4. Neighbors were awakened shortly after midnight when windows in the modest home began "popping" out under pressure built up by the inter nal fire. Firemen controlled the blaze and found the four bodies all in the master bedroom where the fire apparently originated. In vestigators said the blaze may have been started by a smol dering cigarette. Flames were contained in the structure until the windows exploded outward from the heat. Mrs. Colbert's husband, Mar tin, was in Los Angeles at the time of the accident. Miss Davis died at Palm Springs May 23, 1961 of a heart attack. The comedienne left her million dollar estate to a for mer husband in a will made 20 years earlier. But in a court battle over the estate Mrs. Col bert was awarded the bulk of it and the former husband, Si Willis, received a package set tlement of $52,000, including cash and a Palm Springs home. 51,020 Attend Festival Plays ASHLAND A new figure released by William Patton, gen eral manager of the Oregon Shakespearean Festival Associa tion, brings the total attendance for the 1963 season to 51,020.
