The 69-year-old Conservative leader "is extremely well and cheerful and is working from papers on his bed," Dr. Sir John Richardson said after seeing Macmillan this morning. The prime minister's son, Maurice, said his father was "quite comfortable" after spending the night at King Ed ward VII hospital. 'Scrambler' Attached Engineers today attached a portable "scrambler" to Mac millan's bedside telephone to enable him to carry on confi dential government work. For eign Secretary Lord Home and an aide arrived at the hospital late this morning carrying briefcases. Richardson said that if inves tigations being conducted into Macmillan's condition were sat isfactory, the premier would be operated on Thursday morning. MacMillan May Retire The illness, although not con sidered serious in itself, added weight to speculation that Mac millan soon may retire. At the same time, it improved the position of Deputy Premier R. A. Butler, who became act ing premier for the duration of Macmillan's incapacity. Butler was the favorite of ob servers speculating on a possi ble successor to Macmillan, and taking over the prime minister's duties for such a length of time during such a crucial political period was bound to strengthen his position. Two other party leaders, Sci ence Minister Lord Hailsham and Reginald Maudling, t h e chancellor of the Exchequer, al so had wide support. Blow To Career The illness was a blow to Mac millan at an important time in his political career. For many months, he has fought back against demands by Labor and by Conservative ma vericks that he step down. The first attacks were based on Brit ain's failure to gain common market membership, its rising unemployment, and its defense policy controversies. Then, in the summer, came the Profumo scandal. When War Minister John Profumo's affair with callgirl Christine Keeler spread into a series of trials and security investigations, the de mands for Macmillan's resigna tion increased. But he continued to reject them. Your Friendly Family Store - Sixth and Central Cannon Aspen Blankets Popular fall colors. 94 rayon, 6 acrylic. Judge Cottle appeared before the Ashland city council last night and gained council ap proval of his idea. His plan to form a juvenile advisory jury, composed of six Southern Oregon college stu dents and six from Ashland High school, who would serve in his court on a volunteer basis each Thursday evening. From the group of 12, six would act each week. Judge Cottle feels that if youthful offenders are sentenced by persons their own age, it will be more of a humbling ex perience for them. The judge would retain the right to make the final decision, but the jury would have a part in an ad visory capactiy. The judge is planning to in vite the students together with three adults from the faculties of the college and high school to meet with him and Judge Edward C. Kelly of Jackson county circuit court to discuss the plan. Flannel. 7-14. Assorted patterns. I77 e. or Casual Cushions Foam filled. Many colors. Assorted shapes.
