MTOFORn VAIL TRIBL'NE. MEDFORD. OREGON MONDAY. OCTOBER 7. 1963 6 5 Regional Roundup By Clevs Twilchell Regional Editor The summer of 1963 was one for stories about "unusual" plants. We're putting the word unusual in quotation marks, be cause it is almost inevitable that when stories about such plants are run, they turn out to be not so unusual. Back in the last part of Au gust, we ran a story about a philodendron in the living room of the Don McGovern home in Eagle Point. It had bloomed, something which local florists said was very unusual. It wasn't. Within a couple of days we were informed of at least two other such plants in the valley, one of which had not only bloomed but had also pro duced fruit. At the tail end of September, United Press International transmitted a photograph of a couple of tomato plants in Chi cago, 111., which had grown 13 feet high in the yard of a man's home. Within 24 hours after the picture appeared in the Mail Tribune, sure enough, someone called up to report a similar feat. Mrs. Albert Mueller of 404 East D St., Jacksonville, grew two tomato plants from seed to a height of 15 feet. They climbed up onto the roof of her home. In the meantine, we received another story, this one from Central Point, about an avocado plant which had developed in a reportedly unusual way. M r s. Homer Dale of 524 Manzanita st. tried a seed first in water, and when that didn't work she planted it in earth. It grew, but instead of growing just one long stem two or three feet tall, it put out five shoots, three of which developed and started leafing when only two inches tall. County Agent Cliff Cordy was asked for an opinion. He said he had never seen an avocado plant like it but hastened to ex plain that he should not be con sidered an authority on avocado plants. We aren't either, but by this stage of the game we've decided that most "unusual" things are quite normal. KELLY, KELLY FORT DODGE, Iowa (UPD Kelly Fitzgerald married Pat rick Kelly. Dated and first published this 7th day of October. 1963. Theresa G. Adams Executrix Ronald L. Ricketts Attorney for Executrix been received at Crater High school concerning school fees and their use and purpose, C. A. Meyer, superintendent of schools in district 6, issued an explanation which he hopes will bring about a better understand ing between the school and the parents. It should be understood that in Oregon the state does not furnish textbooks for grades 9 through 12 and it is the obliga tion of each student in high school to supply his own, Meyer said. At Crater the following fees are assessed against students at enrollment time. There is a student body mem bership fee of $10 which in part is used to set up a student book loan fund. Seven of the $10.00 dollars goes to ihe student book fund, $1.00 to the school paper, $1.00 to athletics, and $1.00 to the general student body fund. The $7 book fee furnishes all textbooks for one school year. Students must return books at the end of the year or pay for them, also he may be assesed a fee for excessive damage, tacn year a student must get a new set of books, if he naa to iur nish his own, which he may if he wishes, the price would De Drohibitive. Following is a breakdown of book costs for an average 9th grader (costs for each succeed- Rogue River, Mrs. M. Schoene mann of Gold Hill, Mrs. Marcus Dey of Prospect, Mrs. Vernon Thorpe of Medford and Mrs. Arthur McKintosh of Phoenix. Mrs. Chester Guches, county seal co-chairman was in charge. A good many hours of work is given each year by Christmas seal chairmen in getting the mail ready to go out and in keeping the lists as correct as possible and up to date,- Mrs. Guches stated. From the standpoint of vcars of service, Mrs. Hoffman of Eagle Point has one of the lengthiest records. She started helping with the mailing of seals while she was still in high school and for the past 15 years has been chairman for her district. Mrs. Schoenemann represents the Gold Hill Health unit, which has the distinction of being one of the first county health or ganizations in the state and as far as is known the only one in the state still organized. It was cipal, gave a report on the pro- Tiller-Drew PTA Plans Carnival, Variety Show TILLER-DREW - A carnival, to be held in the school gym nasium Oct. 25, and the forth coming variety show, to be di rected by Mr. and Mrs. Avery Grcenman, stage name Jack and Sydna Mann, were main topics of discussion at the Tiller-Drew PTA meeting recently. The meeting was conducted by Mrs. Glenn Hunter, vice president, in the absence of Mrs Gershom Roy, president. Mrs. Richard Williams, mem bership chairman, reported 70 members to dale. Argle Matthews, school pnn geography, $4.73; algebra, $3.30; general science, $3.98 and for eign language, $3.25, for a grand total of $21.11. This can vary some either way. In comparison, for a four year cost of $28, a student is furnish ed his needed textbooks. If he bought his own, which he can. the cost would be at least $50.00 even if he were able to re-sell some of his books. Because of state requirements books are changed every six years, thus every time a series changes there Is no resale value, Meyer explained. The $1.00 for the school paper gives the student a copy of the paper every three weeks for the school year. The $1.00 for ath letics and the $1.00 for the stu dent body fund give students a student body card that admits them to all home games free and also admits them to many events at student rates. Some of this money is used for student council affairs and to help certain activities, such as the annual and paper, meet tneir omigattons. For those taking P. E-, a $1.50 towel fee is charged, and this furnishes the student with a clean towel daily. It can readily be seen that a towel alone would take about half of this. If a stu dent is asked to furnish his own it seldom gets laundered, and if taken home for laundering is otten forgotten. A $1.00 locker fee is assessed and if the student's record is clear this is refunded at the end of the year. Most students get this refund, P. E. suits for boys are $2.75 and if a boy takes care of his suit it will last through his high scnool years. There is a $3.00 shop fee and a $3.00 mechanical drawing fee. The shop fee pays for any shop project the boy takes home. If any amount is left on the card at the end of the year, it is refunded. The mechanical ST mmmmimiimmmmalSBKKmmZmiZ&Mtl IIMBa. .... ..... -3 AT UNION CREEK The new office of the done is some yard work and beautifltation of Union Creek Ranger district of the Rogue River the setting. All that remains to be drawing fee furnishes students with drawing board, paper, drawing set, and most needed materials. The $1.50 typing fee furnishes typing paper all year for typing students. Insurance School insurance Is $3.50 for girls and $4.50 for boys. The rea son for the difference is that boys put in more claims than girls. The school annual is optional and the cost is $3.50. The stu dents receive a yearbook which costs $6 a copy to have publish ed. The difference is usually paid for by advertising. "No school is interested in nickel and diming students con tinually, but it is evident that costs outside the school are many times greater than school costs, with the school doing Quantity buying," Meyer said. "All schools should welcome questions from parents as to fees and why they are charged," he continued.
