4 B SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8, 19K1 MEDFORD SIAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON President Proclaims Employ Physically Handicapped Week (Editor'! note: The follow' lng wai written by Jack Stew art, personel officer at the Veterans Administration Dom iciliary, White City, who is a member of the Jackson Coun ty Committee for the Employ ment of the Physically Handicapped.) By JACK STEWART President Kennedy by procla mation has called upon the peo ple of the nation to observe the week begining Oct. 6, as "Na tional Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." The Jackson County Commit tee for the Employment of the Handicapped, composed of mem bers from Federal, State, and private organizations, supports the President's proclamation to promote the employment of the physically handicapped. Let's look at this philosophy in a broad sense. Any day in any week is a good time to hire the handicapped. Experience has proved it is good business, for a handicap need not be a job handicap when the worker is matched to a job he is able to do. If we don't use today what a human can offer his skill or strength we've wasted an opportunity that can never be regained, tomorrow or any other day. Time For Concentration National Employ the Handi capped Week is the time for con centration on the plight of many thousands of skilled Americans who have been trained to over come handicaps and are ready, willing and able to show how their motivation and training can help employers, but who, too often, don't get the chance to do so. Records of handicapped work ers reflect that they match, and often exceed, the record of the non-handicapped, in safety, pro ductivity and attendance. A physical, handicap, it has been proved, need not be a job handi cap, not when the worker is matched to a job he is able to do. Private Industry has found this to he so, and the Veterans Administration, a leader in the field of rehabilitation, has helped thousands of veterans become Productive citizens. Many are eads of families and contribute Importantly to the civic life of their communities. The VA works closely with the Presi dent's Committee on Employ ment of the Handicapped and plays a major role in telling the public the truth about handi capped workers. Support the President's procla mation and the Jackson County Committee for the Employment of the Physically Handicapped, Any time any week when you have an opportunity to employ a handicapped person, do so, and eventually every man and woman with a physical handi cap who wants a job will have job Oregon Seen as Republican Factor SAN FRANCISCO (UPI) - Oregon Republican National Committeeman Lowell C. Paget of Portland predicted here that his state's wide-open presiden tial primary next year may be the deciding factor in determin ing the 1964 GOP nominee at the national convention here. Paget, here on business, point ed out that under Oregon law, the secretary of state may enter on the May primary ballot the names of all persons prominent ly mentioned for a presidential or vice presidential nomination. To prevent submission of a per son's name requires a flat dis avowal of candidacy. Paget predicted that the Ore gon primary, "coming shortly before that of California," could influence the voters of this state, as well as convention delegates previously selected in other states.
