6 B Dennis the Menace 'It wouldn't k so terrike if win imc imkwi WAAunttjyippwoutoiT? Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn W. Witkini KeclOr 4c Tribune Syndicate, 1963; Sea Urchin Never Has The Occasion To Hurry The original little urchin of the sea is neither lost nor aban doned; it plods along on the ocean bottom and leads a pretty dull life. II is hard to under stand what pleasure these lowly creatures ever get out of life, but they continue to exist. It cannot swim, run, or fly; its only means of locomotion is a painfully slow crawl; a crawl that brings into play about the strangest method of leg move ment one could possibly imag ine. It walks by means of a water vascular system. The ani mal is unique in other ways, too. First, however, for the benefit of anyone not too familiar with the sea urchin, imagine an or ange, with a slice taken from the bottom, which, presents a flat surface. Into the orange imagine a hundred or so short sticks, protruding from the sur face and arranged on the top and sides, and bottom. This would be the shape and some what the appearance or a sea urchin. Just Nit Of course the sticks in the orange would just sit there, do ing nothing but their counter part in the sea urchin would be he the tube-feet, or legs, and they can perform some fantastic accomplishments. Each stick log is attached to the globular body with a ball and socket joint, making easy movement in all directions easily possible. The sea urchin never has oc casion to hurry, it really isn't going anywhere anytime, ex cept ! move to some nearby spot where organic food is more ample, but when it docs move, it accomplishes the "almost im possible." It moves its tube-feet, as well as all the other tube spines on its body by pumping water into them a water vas cular system. Water pressure moves t h e spine, or leg, until its tip con tacts some surface the ocean bottom, or another shell. At the contact, water is withdrawn from the tube-foot, causing a vacuum, the disk end of the spine acting as a sucker. Flood the foot again and the hold is released; follows a continuous incoming and outgoing of water, and the sea urchin moves. Definite Purpose The same water vascular sys tem works equally well with the many spines on the top and sides of the body, and for a very definite purpose. Any object, such as a piece of seaweed or hunk of broken shell landing on the body, is moved along; transported over the bodv by successive movements ot the sivnes 'o be cast away on the other side. As one small group of spines moves the object, an other group engages it. The same movement is resorted to disentangle a mass of seaweed that might lodge on the urchin. At the same time that it is moving whatever object that happens to be present, other lube feet, those underneath the ; animal, may be moving it along the ocean bottom. What should perplex us Is how such a lowly animal can orcan ize itself to carry out such a complex series of movements: with a hundred or more feet and spines to keep in motion it would seem to need a brain or a highly developed nervous sys tem, but it has neither. There seems to be a great deal about the lowly sea urchin that is not very well understood; maybe it isn't important any way.
