(UP1) Victims of Heart Disease May Soon Respond To Surgery ROME (UPI) - Victims of heart disease may soon respond to surgery as successfully and frequently as victims of append icitis, a surgeon said today. The forecast by Dr. S. A. Wes olowski of Brooklyn, N.Y., sum med up the week-long Interna tional Surgeon's Society con gress which ended today. More than 2,000 doctors from 45 na tions attended. The doctors heard several hundred reports, watched live operations on closed circuit tele vision and had an audience with Pope Paul VI. Three American doctors re ported on an operation in which they unclogged the inner linings of the coronary artery walls much as a plumber would clear pipes. Advances made in the coron pictures of the circulation in the coronary arteries to spot ob structions and plan operative procedure. This diagnostic tech nique has allowed them lo greatly lower mortalities in a small group of patients, accord ing to Macoachen. Another Method Three oilier doctors from the United States, B. F. Sachs, II, Soroff and It. A. Deterling Jr., have devised still another way to treat heart disorders. They said they give external support lo a failing heart by in serting a tube into the abdomi nal aorta and allaching a pump. They then pump blood lo the body on the heart's off-bent. This aids circulation, it cuts down on the work the heart has lo do and the pressure it has ary endarterectomy, as the op- l0 overcome in pumping oration is called, may event ually help about 35 per cent of persons suffering coronary ar tery disease, a major heart ail ment.
