Friends of Library Hear Resignation of Mrs.' Deaver as Head Tfte rrimds ef im Library i 4 sbvan rrflmlv . -t. it first fall meeting Monday evening, i Teteii to give $50 to the library i Jer t purchase ol books. H als heard a letter of resig- aiorfirrrMrs. Nathan (Jean) Pwver, e has been president f the group, in which she crtti cijed some library activities. The letter as accepted "with regret." Harry Chipman, vice oresident. conducted the meet ing, and named a three-member nominating committee which will recmrt aUthe annual meet " . ing next month. Th money gift followed the reading ot a lett&V from the trustees of the library request ing such gifts. The letter also is going to other community groups. In part, it says: Prime Service Noled "The prime service of a Pub ' lie Library to its community is through its book supply bocks for children, youth end adults. "Your library is in great need of books, by every index of judgment it lacks books. Com pare it to other Oregon li braries, check its books per capita, or search its shelves in your favorite area, and you will see its weaknesses." The library's book budget for the current year is about $20, 000, of which about half has been spent since the fiscal year started July 1. Critical of Policies Mrs. Deaver's letter of resig nation was critical of the li brary's policies and stated, "for that reason, (I) feel I can func tion no longer within the mem bership of the Friends." It added: "The particular areas which I question are the poorly timed salary increase for the person nel, the contract with the Jose phine county library and the discontinuance of staff calls, on a regular basis, to the county library branches. While the salary increase : for personnel undoubtedly was desirable, the reaction to its implementation by , both the Jackson county court and Jack son county budget committee was not conducive to their ac ceptance of the library county budget increase. The major portion of the library finances are dependent on the Jackson county court and the Jackson county budget committee's good will, and it was most unfortun ate that this wasn't considered to a greater degree, in granting the salary increase. "Repeatedly it has been stated that shortage of personnel for cataloging is one of the great est problems of the library . . . With the Library of Medford and Jackson County considered inadequately financed . . ., until such time as the financing and the personnel are adequate, the Josephine county contract seems unrealistic. "I know that the librarians from the various branches have regular meetings with the staff at the Medford library, but sev eral of the branches are falling below previous percentages of use, in monthly library reports, so it seems obvious more sup- "BY-BYE BIRDIE" and "THE MAN FROM THE DINERS' ClUB" WE ARE OPEN GATES OfIN 6:45 pm "JASON" ON AT 7:30 I 11:45 pn A COLOSSUS k OF ADVENTURE!
