We always have such a good time at the G.'s, but the evening is spoiled for me by the argument with my husband all the way home. When we make a move to leave, the G.'s ask, 'Why so early?' and suggest another round of coffee. 1 want to accept but Herman says no thanks and good night. Herman Y. We get invited back so often because we know when to leave. It's natural for the G.'s as hosts to put on an act of being sorry to see us go. Does Rose think they'll come right out and say, Look, we're tired? Hasn't she enough sense to know when to call it a day? The Council: A wise guest is like a wise virtuoso stingy with the encores. It would not be for such as him that Sacha Guitry would post his famous sign; "Guests invited for the week end are kindly requested not to stay longer than the following Wednesday." Ask yourself, Rose what else, besides entertaining you, your host might like to undertake but can't, until you leave. Behind many a smiling, "Please stay," may be a mental teletype reading, "Please say No, because we can't go on be ing civil so long. The minute you go wc can let loose and have the real good spat we've been storing up" ... In other words, Rose, quit while you're ahead. "Why so early?" may be honestly asked. On the other hand it may be drawled out be tween yawns and add up to sheer sarcasm. You must know your host very intimately before taking such verbal courtesies literally. FRESH Eisenhower Has No Favorites in GOP NEW YORK (UPI) - Former President Dwight D. Eisenhow er said Sunday he had no fa vorites for the GOP presidential nomination and stressed that the party had a "wealth of men" from which to choose a candi date. At the same time Eisenhower, in a copyrighted dispatch in the New York Herald Tribune, de nied reports that he opposed Sen. Barry M. Goldwater (R Ariz.) for the nomination. However, Eisenhower said he was "unclear on precisely" what Goldwater's present views are. He said that only when candi dates mentioned for the nomina tion "are on record with their current views will the party be in a position to make the most intelligent choice. "I think all Republicans would want to learn more about how he (Goldwater) and each of the other possible candidates would nov approach the issues of 1964," he added. J Cystic Fibrosis in Children During September, the Na tional Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation, of 521 Fifth ave., New York 17, N. Y., is conduct ing a campaign for funds which will be used in a search for medicines that may help the many children who now suffer from this chronic and in herited disease. About 1 in every 1,000 in fants is likelv to be born with this very trouble some ailment in which both the pancreas (the big degestive gland behind the stomach) and the lungs work poorly. They work poorly because in this disease the normally wat ery secretions which run out from the pancreas into the bowel, and the normally rather fluid bits of mucus which come up from the lungs, are thick and glue-like. Because the secre tions of the pancreas are not normal, there is poor digestion in the bowel, and hence many of the children have trouble gaining weight and strength. Others have much trouble with their lungs. They cannot easily cough up their sputum, and so sometimes they have to be kept in so-called "mist" tents, in which the air contains a drug designed to make the choking mucus thinner and more fluid. Before 1945, most of these children died before they were a year old, but today those who are well-treated, commonly go into their teens, and even into adult life. Today, we physicians are coming to realize that some adults with queer digestive and lung troubles have probably had since infancy a mild form of cystic fibrosis. The word "cystic" means that the pancreas contains a lot of cysts little bags of fluid. "Fi brosis" means that the pancreas and the lungs contain an ab normal amount of fibrous tissue similar to the gristle in meat. The affected children tend to be bright if anything, brighter than normal. Many have an un usually good sense of taste and KYEStS BONE - USDA CHOICE SHOULDER CUT PORK STEAK PROVEN-IN TOMATO SAUCE-No. 2' TIN Pork 'n Beans 5,,1 CINCH-WHITE, CHOC, YELLOW Cake Mix t 3,89 MARKET-FANCY Long Grain Rice 79c RINGO-ORANGE, GRAPE, FRUIT PUNCH Fruif Drinks, 39 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. Of late it has been found that they lose an abnormally large amount of salt in their sweat. Actually, there is a sim ple test which can show that the sweat on a child's hand is full of salt. This generally confirms the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis. In the old days, the diagnosis was probably often missed, be cause the disease can produce the clinical picture of a chronic bronchitis, an asthma, a whoop ing cough, a pneumonia, or a chronic diarrhea. That the trouble is inherited is shown by the fact that broth ers and sisters can be similarly afflicted. Usually the parents show no sign of it, but they are "carriers" who are able to pass the defect on to their child ren. Apparently these children are born without some body chemical which is essential to the normal functioning of the pancreas and lungs. One of the earliest signs of the disease can be a sort of in testinal obstruction in the just born infant. His bowels will not move, and in the worst eases he may have to be operated on so that his life may be saved. The children with cystic fibrosis have poor resistance to infec tions with harmful germs. I now read that the disease is respon sible for most of the serious chronic lung disease met with among American children to day. It rivals cancer as a cause of death up to the age of 15 years. The annual toll in lives is larger than that due formerly to in fantile paralysis. There are prob ably 25,000 children now in this country with the disease, and the number is increasing. The child is likely to be coughing all the time, and perhaps wheez ing. He is likely to have large bulky and foul-smelling bowel movements; and in spite of a big appetite, he finds it hard to gam weight. It is important that the diagnosis be made early, so that proper treatment can be started. Fluid Studied Often when the sick child is first seen, the doctor's provisi onal diagnosis is celiac disease. But then he x-rays the chest and makes a sweat test, and perhaps he passes a small tube down through the stomach, and each Apartment House Residents Chased PORTLAND (UPI) - About 50 persons, some of them elderly, were forced to flee early Sunday when fire swept through part of the May Apartments here. Susan Graham, 18, was treated for smoke inhalation and John Nysmyth, another resident of the four-story building, suffered a cut hand when he smashed the glass out of a fire alarm. Firemen used ladder trucks to rescue 15 persons huddled on fire escapes. This last test may show that this fluid lacks normal amounts of the digestive secretions that come from the pancreas. Sometimes the physician can guess what the trouble is the minute he sees that the child was born with a rectal prolapse (some of the rectum comes through the anus to the outside). This occurs in one out of four cases of cystic fibrosis. Occa sionally the child will early get cirrhosis of the liver. These children can be greatly helped by being given large amounts of pancreatic extract, which helps them to digest their food. The diet should be high in protein and low in fatty foods. Vitamins A and B should probably be given. Everyone who is interested and who can afford it would do well to support the Cystic Fi brosis Foundation, especially with funds which can make available more research. Peo ple who have affected children can get the address of local branches of the Foundation from the central office. One of the commonest dis eases of man is that of harden ing of the arteries.
