Medford A new testing program to de tect unknown tuberculosis has been inaugurated under the joint sponsorship of Sacred Heart hos pital, the medical staff of the hospital, the Jackson county health department and the Jack son County Tuberculosis and Health association. Under the new program each patient entering Sacred Heart hospital may be given a simple skin test, called the Tine test, which indicates by a slight red ness and swelling within 48 to 72 hours if a person has ever come in contact with the tuber cle bacilli, the germ which causes tuberculosis. This docs not mean, a spokes man for the medical staff point ed out, that each person with a positive reaction has tuberculo sis, but that the germ is present, walled off, and could become ac tive at some. time. New TB Cases Medical authorities estimate that 90 per cent of the new cases of tuberculosis will be found among those who have a posi tive reaction to the skin test, the spokesman said. The test involves a small prick on the skin of the forearm, and if a positive reaction results, the patient is advised to have a chest x-ray to be sure there is no active disease present. This should also be followed with per iodic check-ups, doctors advise, since other systems of the body may be involved. Work Continues At Willow Point Work on expanding the camp ground at Howard Prairie lake is continuing at Willow Point, County Parks and Recreation Director Neil Ledward reported to the county court Friday. The semi-improved area will be under the direct jurisdiction of the Howard Prairie park ran ger and will not be part of the Howard Prairie concession, it was explained. Clyde Richmond and Charlie Close, two county employees at the lake have staked out a new entrance road and picnic area, plus boat access at Willow Point. The roads will be "rough ed in" by tractor later this fall, Ledward said. Among projects scheduled this fall for the concession area are construction of a cover over gas pumps, staking out and signing each camp site, level and graveling new campsites, con structing a log boom on the south side of the boat basin, moving the docks to a safe lo cation in Hoxie creek and an choring them. The county court and parks director are investigating possi bilities of a new contract with Uoyd Morris, concessionaire at Willow lake. The county roads department has constructed the parking area and boat ramp, Ledward noted. The testing was started at the hospital on a regular basis about two months ago, and there has been a reaction rate of 10 per cent. j Expose Others ' "Too many patients have been ' treated for flu or a similar dis ease only to find after they have exposed others in the hospital that they have tuberculosis," a hospital spokesman stated. "Because tuberculosis usually ' does not produce symptoms until in an advanced stage and be- ; cause it is an infectious disease, it is a public health problem," Dr. A. E. Merkel, county health j officer reported. "We therefore feel Sacred Heart hospital is performing an important service to the com- j munity by making this test available. In addition, of course, : physicians offer the skin test as j a routine procedure in their of-; fices," the public health officer stated. I Chest X-Ray Clinic Emmctt Bullard, case finding chairman . for the association, pointed out that another activity of the case finding program is the chest x-ray clinic operated by the association at the Sacred Heart hospital each Thursday af ternoon and the first Wednesday evening of each month. j The clinic is operated on a cost basis and all adults, espe cially those with a skin reaction, I are urged to have chest x-rays annually unless advised other wise by their physician. J Chester Irish, president of the Health association,, expressed , appreciation to the hospital, the ! medical staff and the medical society for their cooperation in ! helping the association to reach their goal in the eradication of tuberculosis and the control of other respiratory diseases. Six Ringworm Cases Reported in County There were six cases of ring worm, not on the scalp, how ever, reported in Jackson coun ty last week, the Jackson Coun tv health department reported. All were in the Eagle Point dis trict. There was a total of 23 cases of communicable diseases in the county for the week, with ring worm and impetigo leading the list, the latter with five cases. There were two cases of in fluenza, two of pink eye, three ot pneumonia, two of measles, and one of mumps, German measles and gonorrhea, Dr. A. E. Mcrkcl. director of the Health department, reported. Mathis Appearance Scheduled in City ASHLAND - Johnny Mathis, world known popular singer will appear at Hedrick Junior High school in Medford, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. under Southern Oregon col lege sponsorship. Mathis, who records on the Columbia label, also has ap peared at many lop night clubs such at the Blue Angel, The Vil lage Vanguard, and Copacabana in New York, Chez Paree in Chicago, Cocoanut Grove in Los Angeles, the Sands and "Sahara in Las Vegas and the Fountain bleau and Eden Roc in Miame Beach. Billboard named him "Num ber One Most Promising Male Vocalist of 1957" on their poll and before the same year was out, his hometown honored him by naming him "San Francis; j co's Outstanding Citizen of the1 Year." He presently has 15 hest sell ing albums and his single record sales .have passed the six mil lion mark. Tickets may he purchased at SOC in Rritt student center. Ashland-Talent Fond Reaches $3,010 of Goal ASHLAND The Ashland-Tal-ent United Fund has reached $3,010, or 13.5 per cent of the $22,222.22 goal, 1963 drive chair man, Dr. Charles E.
