Brakes Fail Donald Morris Eccles, 57, of 108 Cottage St., Medford, was driving down Chestnut ave., Ashland, shortly before 6 p.m. Monday when the brakes on his car failed. The ve hicle turned into a private drive way at the home of Frona Pul sipher, 610 Chestnut ave., struck a fence and wound up in a veg etable garden. Eccles was not injured, police said. Brush Fire About a tenth of an acre of grass and brush burned Monday night in the Griffin Creek area, according to the state forestry department. A crew was out at the scene again this morning mopping up. Cause of the fire was not immediately known. I IB, "Where Everybody ACCUSED OF MURDER A vacationing Glendale, Calif., police officer captured a 72-year-old retired carpenter accused of mur dering his wife and sealing her body in a wall of their home. Joseph Lewis, shown in custody, was arrested while waiting for his car to be serviced. The officer, George Smith, who also was at the service station, recognized Lewis and placed him under arrest. (UP1) A young criminal attorney stalled the trial for the alleged "murder-for-hire" of his heavi ly insured wife Monday by ask ing to see a co-defendant's con fession. T. Eugene Thompson, 35, ac cused of being the mastermind in the slaying of his wife, Car ol, 34, March 6, also asked that the co-defendant, Dick W. C. Anderson, be given a men tal test. Hennepin County District Court Judge William D. Gunn said he would hear arguments on the motions Thursday. Thompson, a rising attorney in the Twin Cities, is charged with plotting the death of his wife after insuring her for more than $1 million. Norman Mas train, 39, an ex-prizefighter from Spring Lake Park, Minn., has been accused of being the "middle man." All three including Ander son, an ex-salcsman who alleg edly was the "trigger man" in the slaying at the Thompson home have been charged wun nisi degree murder. McGuire. of Clcarwafpr Wash., was serving a 25-year sentence for robbing a bank at Forks of more than $40,000. The holdup occurred in I960 ana mcuuire Degan serving his sentence in 1961 after plead ing guilty. He was missed dur ne a ree- ular check at the prison at 5 p.m. Monday.
