It started the Sunday afternoon I began complaining again about the dead flowers along the fence. I told him to put his paper down and go out there and cut them off. Nobody could know he was going to cut bis finger, too. It wasn't a very big cut, and the lawn looked a lot better with the flowers down except that then the fence needed painting. I didn't think of that until he was back on the davenport with his hand bandaged. Well, when I saw he wasn't going to paint the fence, I decided to dig up some Virginia creeper at the corner of the house and plant it by the fence. JuBt because he saw me go by the window dragging the heavy spade, he didn't need to make such a scene. He jumped up and came running out and grabbed the spade out of my hand. No, he wasn't exactly yelling be- cause there were people going by on Sunday afternoon drives, but he was talking in a pretty loud voice. His face was red, too, but it was a hot day. Anyway, I told him to dig a nice, deep hole by the lamppost because I thought the vines would look pretty at that end of the fence. He dug for quite a while, and he perspired quite a lot because the ground was so hard. I watched him so he'd be sure to do it the way I wanted him to. How was I supposed to know those roots I told him to chop out were the underground electrical cables? I don't think anyone should get so angry, especially when he knows how to fix things like that. Of course, it did take him three hours, lying there on his stomach in the sun and having trouble wrapping the wires because his hand was bandaged. The only reason it took so long with the last cable is that he did it over four times before he found out I'd been turning the wrong switch. There were only a few little sparks, and it's not as though he was electrocuted or anything. Honestly, it all struck me as pretty funny, and I kept getting the giggles while he was working.
