Everyone else, including the oddsmakers who have made them prohibitive favorites, fig ure the Dodgers are home free. Sandy (The Dandy) Koufax all but deflated the Cardinals completely when he pitched his record - breaking 11th shutout for a 4-0 victory that increased the Dodgers' lead to three games with only 10 more left for them to play. "It's not over yet," pointed out Alston with his character istic caution. "We still have another game with the Cardi-! nals. Keane took the same tack. "We still have enough games left (eight) to win the pen nant," said the hopeful St. Louis manager. "We never considered this game or any other game up to now 'a must'." The 27-year-old Koufax had a no-hitter until Stan Musial led off the seventh inning with a single and went on to achieve his 24th victory with a four-hit effort. Koufax' 11th shutout estab lished a major league record for left - handed pitchers and represents the most by any pitcher since Grover Cleveland Alexander set the all-time mark of 16 shutouts in 1916. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor ST. LOUIS (UPI) - "That has to be my biggest game even bigger than the no-hitters," said Sandy Koufax and the amens, brother were echoed today by Dodger fans from Los Angeles Malihu Ex. pressway to the Brooklyn Go- wanus. "Now we've got the Cardinals on the ropes," added the 27-year-old left - hander. "Now we've got 'em where we want 'em." Koufax had just scored one of the most important victories in Dodger history a brilliant, four-hit, 4-0 shutout that gave the Dodgers their second straight triumph over the Car dinals and increased their Na tional league lead over the Red birds to three games. With the third and final game of the crucial series scheduled for tonight, the Cardinals are now in the almost-impossible po tion of having to gain three games in their remaining eight even to tie. The face an abso lute "must" game when Bob Gibson (18-3) goes against Pete Richcrt (5-1) tonight, but the odds will remain heavily against them even if they win it. Monkey Taken Out It was obvious that the Dodg ers figured Koufax had finally taken the "monkey" the mem ory of last year's late - season collapse and disastrous playolf with the San Francisco Giants off their backs. They swarm ed around him in the dressing room . . . pounding his back . . . shaking his hand ... and sing ing his praises to everyone in s'Rht- . , "He's one heckuva pitcher. said manaeer Walt Alston with a smile.
