Taxes, Benefits On AFL-CIO Agenda
EUGENE (UPI)-Taxes and
workmen's compensation bene
fits were two of the principal
items on the agenda when the
Oregon AFL-CIO opened its an
nual convention here today.
A move was expected favor
ing an initiative measure in
creasing workmen's compensa
tion benefits on the November,
1964, election ballot. An amend
ment to ban private insurance
firms from participating in the
program also was under con
sideration. The 1963 legislature's tax pro
gram and the Oct. 15 referen
dum also were contain to come
up for discussion. Some labor
leaders have said they do not
like the tax program, but are
afraid a special session would
result in a worse bill.
A resolution that would move
the AFL-CIO state headquarters
from Portland to Salem also
has been prepared for introduction.
CHAMPION PUFFER
0MBERSLEY, England (UPI)
Mrs. Winifred Connolly Sunday
defeated 50 men in a pipe-puffing
contest when she kept puff
ing for 49 minutes and 20 seconds.
The convention runs through
Friday.
