An outstanding variety is the swallow. The yearly move ment of these birds is seemingly always on schedule and has caused much conjecture, amaze ment, and of course some con tradiction. These birds, usually in huge flocks, leave their northern nest ing grounds in the fall for winter vacations. There is visible proof of this every year, but some deny the coming and going is according to plan or at any pre dictable time. The arrival and departure of the swallows at the old mission known as Capistrano has intri gued the imagination of nearly all people that read newspapers for many years. In the begin ning, it was more of less a legend, bill careful records kept over a long period of time seems to prove these birds left on a certain date each fall and arrived on a prescribed day the following spring. They accomplish this without the aid of a calendar or a clock. These swift flying creatures left and returned with disconcerting regularity. Carefully Observed The swallows of this old mis sion have been carefully ob served, and the watchers read ily admit that here is an ex ample of animal behavior that is confusingly cluttered up with loose ends. Many of these loose ends have an obvious and well known attachment to the main body of the migratory mystery. Students of bird actions have felt pretty sure that migration is triggered by a failing food supply, weather conditions, pre vailing winds that might cause them to move away from such a disturbance, failing light, or any of several other theories. But the departure of a group of birds on a certain day each year throws a "feathered monkey wrench" into the machinery and we come up with more ques tions. Th policeman is trying Small Worlds Around Us There have been many sup erstitions about swallows that, in the light of present-day know ledge, are utterly ridiculous, but at the time, seemed like logical explanations. One of these old beliefs was the conviction that the birds buried themselves in the mud at the approach of cold weather and came out of this wet hiber nation the following spring. The fact that swallows were never seen on the ground gave rise to the idea the birds spent the hours of darkness aloft, like the mythical flying Dutchman that always and forever sailed over the sea and never came to rest. We know the swallow sel dom, if ever, walks; its short legs are too weak to support it, so it spends the night clinging to some support. But the swallows of Capis trano apparently pay nn atten tion to wind direction, tempera ture, barometric pressure, or food supply, for all these things couldn't possibly happen simul taneously. Neither could it be al ways coincidence for that does not repeat with such amazing accuracy. Of course we humans are apt to discredit what we cannot ex plain and the swallows know more about "swallow business" than any of us that attempt to understand them. Reclamation Plans Will Be Discussed Bureau of reclamation plans involving the proposed Rogue basin project and specifically the Sams Valley Irrigation dis trict will be discussed by bureau officials at a special meeting in the Sams Valley Grange hall at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18. Robert Butte, chief of the engineering division, Vernon Lawrence, chief of the land classification division, and John F. Mangan, area engineer from the bureau's Salem office, will talk to future irrigation district water users. "Bureau data on plans of de velopment are yet preliminary," Mangan wrote George Loftin, route 2, Central Point. Loftin is one of the irrigation district di rectors. "Final cost figures will not be available for some time, but we will, I am sure, be able to out line our plans for irrigating some 12,000 acres in the Sams Valley area from storage on Rogue river in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers proposed Elk creek reservoir," he wrote. "We will be prepared to ex plain the steps to complete our report and the steps ahead of the district before this project becomes an operating reality," he said.
