"I think we'll be all right on offense," said the coach. The success of Grants Pass operations, however, could hinge a lot on the health of Gary Van Koten at the right halfback post. He's currently sidelined with the back ailment from track which kept him out of the Mcdford game last fall. "If we can have Van Koten, we'll have a good backficld, he's dan gerous all the time," remarked Mel, who is the dean of District 6 A-l grid coaches. Veteran Kackfield Grants Pass does have a vet eran backficld among its 15 lettermen. In addition to Van Koten the backs are Tom Spar lin, quarterback: Terry lsabell, left half, and Rich Ireland, full back. Other backs who have let tered are Bill Newland and Bill Cole, the latter a defensive player. Larry Forsgren, a capa ble player up from the junior varsity, is the No. 1 right half in Van Kolen's absence. In the line there are Ihree regulars from last year. (UPI) - Coach John Ralston's biggest problem at Stanford is how well have the Indian veterans adapt ed themselves to his version of the Flanker-T. Ralston also got a solid look at his new "three quarterback" backfield. He has given it that name because Chuck Weaver, Steve Thurlow and Dick Rags- dale all have played the posi tion. Post, a junior who missed last season because of an injury, set up both touchdowns for the win ning squad. He completed four of 11 passes for 64 yards and ran for 58 more yards on 10 carries. Halfback H. D. Murphy scored on a 24-yard run and fullback Lu Bain tallied on a 1-yard plunge for the Whiles. Post set up Murphy's touchdown scamper with a 12-yard pass and ran IB yards lo set up Bain's scoring plunge. All-American halfback Mel Renfro and Bob Berry, the Ducks' regular quarterback last season, missed Ihe full-scale scrimmage with minor injuries. The first remark was by Al Akins, Southern Oregon college football coach, concerning his Red Raiders. The second was by Paul Evensen, Medford high football line coach, concerning the Black Tornado. Four Shrine game football players and their high school coaches were guests. The play ers were Charles Pomeroy, Ea gle Point; Jim Calhoun, St. Mary s, and Dan Miles and Gary Griffin, Medford. Pomeroy and Calhoun played in the East West contest last month and Griffin and Miles in the State Metro tilt. A guest also was Chris Brewer, Medford, State team manager. Coaches Introduce Introductions of the five youths were made by Coaches Vern Steward, Eagle Point; Bill McKibbin, St. Mary's, and Fred Spiegelberg, Medford. Of the Southern Oregon college grid outlook, Akins reported, we're going to have a good team this year." He said, "You're go ing to see a fine ball club" and mentioned that SOC plays wide open football. Akins reported that a four-year contract with University of Hawaii is all but signed. Evensen said that the Black Tornado has its largest line since since Medford had its worst season in 1953. "Our kids now move quick," the line men tor reported. Dr. Leonard Mayfield, Med ford superintendent of schools, told Linebackers that the recon structed and returfed high school football field has come ; through in good shape. Mayfield said that green and amber lights 1 will be on the poles of the yard- j ace chain this season. There will be red lights on the down j box and on the red flag poles at the corner poles on the goal lines.
