Southern 0riIi6GEST SHOPPING CENTER .... The Ckssified ad Columw'of the ; D Medford Mail Tribune Tuesday, Sepl. 3, 1963 1 ' .. A What Causes The Homing Pigeon To Kelurn Home! "He flies," was the simple answer the small boy gave as an explanation of how the hom ing pigeon gets home. And how, after many years of scientific study we still cannot get much closer to the real answer. There are, of course, any number of theories but they are still the ories. No one can say which one, if any is the true fact. It would be a good thing to know, too, as the ability to re turn to one's starting place from a distance of one mile or many miles would be valuable to the aircraft pilot, the sailor, or even the driver of a motor car on a cross-country trip. This homing instinct is not entirely a monopoly with the pigeon. Nearly all birds and many animals have it in vary ing degrees. The Arctic tern, a Boat Battered; Fishermen Escape Eureka, Calif. -(UPD- Two commercial fishermen escaped but their 49-foot tuna boat was pounded to driftwood by the surf Monday after the vessel went aground 18 miles north of Eureka. "I made a mistake in naviga tion," said skipper and owner Sven Swenson, 62, of West Seat tle. Wash. His boat, the Sherman, went aground in offshore sand while Svenson searched in heavy fog for the entrance to Humboldt Bay. Svenson and his crewman, Norman Steenerson, 51, of Oak land, Calif., tried to escape in a skiff, but it promptly overturned in the heavy breakers. They swam 200 feet to shore and hiked a mile to a ranch, where they were given coffee and warm clothing. Svenson said the boat was worth $20,000 and had 16 tons of tuna aboard. "The boat was all I had," he said. Suspects Quizzed In La Grande Death La Grande -(UP!) Authori ses here continued lo question possible suspects today in the Minciay slaying of Maggie Hay mon, 57, at her home. Union county medical exam iner J. Randall Sloop said the woman was beaten with a liquor bottle and strangled with an electric cord from a hot plate. He added that there appeared to have been an attempt to as sault the woman criminally, Her body was found late Sunday by Isaac Lowe, a neighbor. Chief of Police Oliver E. Jleeve questioned two suspects Monday, but no charges were filed. STAR -llv CLAY R. ySr; -mar 2? I) 5- 8 M 35 AS M 87 88 Your Daily Activity Guide According lo the Slan. Phone 773-3522 Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. WATKINS (Register and Tiibuni Syndkite: '.96 J) small bird with no great strength, travels thousands of miles every year and arrives on time at both ends of the trip, going or coming. They seem to have two homes, poles apart, and commute between the two. And they accomplish this feat without a compass or a road map. Men have taken advantage of the love a pigeon has for its home. Even in this day of thej radio and the telephone, these I birds still play a part in com- j munications, when power fail-: ure occurs or wires are down. 1 They even play a part in war fare. No records are available as to the actual number of lives that have been saved due to j the ability of homing pigeons to find their way home. There are pigeons whose names are enblazoned on the records of j the War Department, and his-' tory may record their fame. ! Fly Fast Homing pigeons have been dropped from airplanes and have been seen to plummet to ward earth until they were about 1,000 feet above the ground, when they regain their balance, circle a time or two, then head straight for home. They have been known to fly from 30 to 70 miles per hour, and may cover 1,000 miles, often without a rest. It is thought there is a very sensitive organ at the end of the bird's optic nerve which measures the distance, or per haps the variance in the earth's magnetic field, and the speed at which the earth itself is turning under the flying bird. When the bird arrives within a certain range, the familiar vibrations tell it that home is near, and he follows the beam to the exact spot from which it was taken. No Diplomats Other observers, equally cer tain, say the bird is influenced by air pressure, or light rays, or anRle of light. Of the various and different schools of thought, there seems to be no one quali fied to receive a diploma. Dur ing the years man has accom plished some remarkable tools in directional finding, radar and magnetic calculations. Night flying has become as easy as peeling a banana. Knowing this we are apt to belittle the accomplishments of the pigeon or the migratorv birds; we even say the Diceon is a piKer and gets lost as often as he gets home. Often humans are jealous of a lesser crea ture's abilities, especially if we cannot understand or explain how they do it. Probably t h e pigeon Itself docs not know cither, but he most certainly accomplishes a feat in the regular run of ev eryday life that requires a whale of a lot of doing. Could we do as well, we would be pretty cocky about It.
