Newspaper Page TextDodgers Winners 5-3 To Take Series From SF 3 Games To 1 By MARTIN LADER L'PI Sports Writer - Like all good troopers, the Los Angeles Dodgers know when to .change their act. , The Dodgers provided one of the biggest sports thrills of 1962 when they dissipated a healthy .first place lead in the final week of the season and then blew the playoffs to the San Francisco Giants. - The performance received heavy nation-wide publicity and was good for the box office. But -a happier ending was being de manded by the Los Angeles cus "tomers this year. And it looks like they're going to get it. The Dodgers trapped the Gi 'ants in a deadly bear hug be fore an appreciative audience during the week end and shook most of the remaining life out .of the defending champions. They completed the job Sunday with a 5-3 decision to win the Tjig series, three games to one, and knock San Francisco back to third place, 7 'A games off the pace. Moon Raps Double A two-run double by pinch hitter Wally Moon in the eighth inning was the crucial blow for the Dodgers, who went into the frame trailing, 3-2. Moon car ried the final run across on Ron Fairly's pinch-hit single. Veteran Johnny Podres, mak ing his first relief appearance iince 1961, turned back the Gi ants in the ninth inning after "they had touched young Dick :Calmus for two singles. Calmus gained credit for his third vic tory in four decisions. Harvey Kuenn had sent the iGiants ahead in the seventh ?vith a home run, but starter ;Billy O'Dell and relievers Don Aarsen and Billy Hoeft were jjnable to hold the lead in the eighth. Larsen was charged Tvith the loss. " The game drew a crowd of 54,263 for a four-game total of 218,948. Cards Stop Phils In other contests, the second place St. Louis Cardinals re mained six games behind Los Angeles by beating the Philadel phia Phillies, 7-3; the Pittsburgh Pirates tripped the Cincinnati Reds, 6-4; the New York Mets outlasted the Milwaukee Braves, 6-4, in 16 innings; and the Chi cago Cubs nipped the Houston Colts, 4-3. Curt Simmons threw a six hitter for the Cards and helped his own cause with a triple and a steal of home. It was the 12th time Simmons has beaten the Phils against two reversals since they traded him. Ken Boyer hit his 20th homer for the Cards in the fifth inning. A grand slam home run by Bill Virdon with two out in the ninth inning carried reliever Earl Francis to his fourth tri umph for the Pirates. Leo Car denas hit a three-run homer for the Reds in the second inning. Tim Harkness slammed a two run circuit in the 16th inning to end a four-hour and 33-minute marathon at New York. Larry Bearnarth, who pitched score less ball for the last seven in nings, won his third game against six losses. Bob Tiefe nauer was the hard-luck loser for the Braves. Ron Santo's ninth-inning dou ble drove in the decisive run for Chicago and provided Lin dy McDaniel with his 10th vic tory in 16 decisions. The 24-year-old righthander from Sycamore, 111., pitched the Pacific Coast league's third no hit, no-run game of the season Sunday, stopping the Den v e r Bears, 1-0, for Tacoma in the second game of a doubleheader. Thomas, on the parent San Francisco club's roster last spring, and Denver's Dennis Ri bant battled head-to-head from the start. The Giants gave Thomas, a sturdy, 6-3, 220-pound righthander all the support he needed in the second inning when they scored the game's only run. A double by Bobby Barton, an infield hit by Joe Amalfitano and a sacrifice fly by Gil Sparks produced the run. Thomas, in boosting his rec ord to 15-12, struck out five batters in the seven-inning game Long Beach Legion Ball Champion Keene, N.H. -(UPI)- Long Beach, Calif., staved off a ninth inning rally to defeat Memphis, Tenn., 5-4, in the final game of the American Le gion Little World Series Sunday. The victory gave the cham pions a 5-0 series record and an overall season mark of 29-4. Memphis, which came into the series undefeated, wound up the series 3-2 for a season rec ord of 35-2. The Roseburg, Ore., entry in 'the series lost its tirst two games. Ramblers Gain Softball Finals Portland (UPD The Mc Kee Ramblers of Beaverton can defend their Northwest regional men's Softball championship to night. The Ramblers, undefeated in the nine-team, double - elimina tion tournament, meet the win ner of a losers' bracket game today between the once-beaten Salem Vandervort Builders and Seattle's Kansas TV City. If McKee is beaten in the game, a second contest will fol low immediately. The Ramblers defeated the Builders 1-0 Saturday and top ped TV City 2-0 Sunday. Indians Clinch Title With the northern division race already settled in favor of the Spokane Indians, the only interest left is the three way battle for the southern di vision title between Oklahoma City, San Diego and Dallas-Ft. Worth. Oklahoma City currently leads the race, two games in front of San Diego and three over Dallas-Ft. Worth. Spokane clinched the north ern title on Saturday and will meet the winner of the southern title in a best-of-seven series starting on Sept. 10 to decide the league championship. San Diego took two from Se attle Sunday, 2-1 and 9-3; Okla homa City edged Hawaii, 5-4; Spokane shaded Portland, 4-2, and Dallas-Ft. Worth split with Salt Lake City, winning the opener, 5-1, and dropping the nightcap, 8-1. Hardy Wins It Carroll Hardy banged a home run in the seventh inning to give Oklahoma City a 5-4 victory over Hawaii. The blow came off Bob Duliba who was charged with the loss in relief. Tom Borland got the triumph, also as a reliefer. Islander Bob Perry banged his third home run in as many games. The hitting of Dick Nen and John Werhas provided the need ed runs for Spokane and the third relief pitcher, Phil Or tega, put a stopper on Portland to gain his 12th victory. Portland held a 2-0 lead but Spokane kept pecking away in the sixth and seventh innings for single runs and then iced the contest in the eighth with a pair of tallies. Ohva .spoils It Ray Jablonski tripled home the Ranger margin of victory over the Bees in the opener after Billy Ott clubbed a three run homer for Salt Lake City. In the nightcap the Bees scored in each of the first four innings to build up an insurmountable lead. Al Lary lost his shutout in the fourth when Pedro Oliva homered. Bob Will collected four hits in as many trips in the 14-hit Bee attack in the second game. The Padres' drive for the Southern division title was dealt a severe blow with the loss of Deron Johnson. He was hit by a Hal Kolstad pitch in the fourth inning of the first game, which the Padres won 2-1 from Seattle. They also took the sec ond 9-3. Giants Tussle Chicago Cubs San Francisco -(UPD- The San Francisco Giants, their hopes to overhaul the front running Los Angeles Dodgers all but dashed during the week end, met the Chicago Cubs in a holiday doubleheader at Can dlestick Park today. With first place in the Nation al league race all but out of reach for the Giants, they took dead aim on the runnerup spot today. The Giants lost to the Dodgers. 5-3. Sunday to fall Ti games off the pace. The second place St. Louis Cardinals, mean while, downed the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-3. to remain six games behind the Dodgers. Bob Bolin (8-4) and Jack Fish er (6-9) were San Francisco manager Al Dark's pitching se lections for today's twinbill. AMANT Los Angeles (UPD The Los Angeles Dodgers have the San Francisco Giants off their back today but there's no rest for the league-leaders. With only 28 games to play the Dodgers are a shoo-in for the pennant even if they play only .500 ball. The magic number for the Dodgers is 22 any combina tion of wins and losses totaling that amount will give them the flag. The concluded four game se rics with the Giants was a huge financial success for both teams. Over 2.000.009 Each of the games drew more than 54,000 fans. The crowd Sun day was 54,263. Attendance for the series was 218,948. 1 n e Dodgers went over the two-million mark for the fourth time since they emigrated from Brooklyn in 1958. Season's home attendance is 2,131,648. Alston named Sandy Koufax, 20-5, to start the first game of a Labor Day doubleheader against the Houston Colts this afternoon. In the second game, he was undecided between Calmus and Podres. The Colts sent word they would use Dick Farrell, 10-11, a former Dodger and always a tough one for them, and Chris Zachary, 0-1. The Giants' loss to the Dodg ers Sunday left the San Fran cisco players a bit glum, but manager Alvin Dark said, "The season isn't over we'll keep trying. The Dodgers just 'out bullpenncd' us." Archer Blower Defeats Studs Portland (UPD Archer Blower of Portland edged the Seattle Cheney Studs 3-2 in the first game of a best-of-three series for the American Ama teur Baseball Congress North west regional tournament cham pionship Sunday night. The Portland team, defending national AABC champion, and the Cheney Studs meet again to night to decide the representa tive of the region in the nation al tourney at Battle Creek, Mich., this month. Mike's kid is 24-year-old Tom Tresh, son of former Chicago White Six catcher Mike Tresh, who was a "plugger" for 12 years in the big leagues and al ways paid his way into the World Series. Old Mike had the great thrill in 1962 of seeing his boy win a job with the New York Yank ees, win American league rook ie of the year honors and star in the World Series. And this year he's having the even bigger thrill of seeing Tom solidify his position as a big leaguer by filling the seven league boots of no less a star than Mickey Mantle, sioo.OOO-a-year slugger of the perennial world champions. It's a Cakewalk for the Yan kees again this year, of course, and few players can claim greater credit than Tresh,. who switched from shortstop, where he earned his spurs as a rookie last season, to center field, where he followed in the foot steps of Mantle, Joe DiMaggio and Earl Combs. Hits Two Homers Tresh borrowed a page from Mantle's book of heroics Sunday when he hit two homers one right-handed and one left-handed to lead the Yankees to a 5-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Tom's second homer of the game came off Dick Hall in the eighth inning and gave re lief pitcher Tom Metcalf his first major league triumph. The blow followed a two-run homer by pinch-hitting Mantle that cut the score to 4-3. The win enabled the Yankpcs to retain their 12-game margin over the Chicago White Six, who topped the Minnesota Twins, B-3. The Cleveland Indians swept a doubleheader from the Detroit Tigers, 6-3 and 3-1. The Boston Red Sox shaded the Washing ton Senators, 4-3, in 10 innings and the Kansas City Athletics downed the Los Angeles Angels 7-6, in other American League games. Landis Heads Sox Jim Landis led an 11-hit at tack with a double and a three run homer as the White Sox dealt the Twins a second straight loss and presented Hoyt Wil helm with his fourth win of the season. Earl Battey homered for the Twins, whose Bill Dailey dropped his third decision. Dick Donovan won his 11th game and Pedro Ramos his sev enth in the Indians' sweep of the Tigers. Mike Dc La Hoz hit a grand slam homer in the first inning to spark the Indians to their first-game triumph and Woodie Held had a double and a homer to lead the Tribe's 10 hit attack in the nightcap. Crater Comets Go Back To Hard Work Tonight Central Point "We might surprise a few people," Head Coach Keith Johnson remarked after a week of football drills at Crater High school. The Comets go back to hard work this evening after having yesterday off. Players went through intense activity for 30 minutes of their drill on Fri day. Saturday evening Johnson had just a dozen or so of his specialists on hand. Workouts have been "kinda slow," said Johnson, "but we're plugging along." The mentor said that "we re pushing offense this week." The aim is to get the line and the backs to work together. Ot' fensive blocking had much at tention in last week's drills. Work was mostly in groups. Now, the objective is to put those lessons into team effort. Push Conditioning "We are really pushing for the conditioning," Johnson fur ther stated. He reported that turnouts have been real good, running from 50 to 55 players. The squad has been split with some 30 working as the varsity and the others as jayvees. An intrasquad scrimmage is billed for next Saturday at 8 p. m. Hacks Darryl bummenield and Vern Swanson "arc doing the good job which we antici pated," according to the coach. Bears Cinch Second Half NW Flag By United Press International The Yakima Bears Sunday night clinched the second half championship in the Northwest league by trimming Wenatchee 8-5 in the first game of a base ball doubleheader. Wenatchcee won the nightcap 6-5 but the first game was the big one for the Bears. Yakima earned the right to tangle with Lewiston, the first half champion, in a best-of-five series for the league title. The playoff series opens Tuesday night at Lewiston and the first two games will be played there. The remainder of the series will be played at Yakima. Regular season play ends to night with a full slate of dou bleheaders. In other action Sunday night, Salem topped Eugene 4-2 and 12-8 and Lewiston divided a pair with Tri-City. The Broncs won the opener 4-3 but the An gels took the second contest 6-5. Winning pitcher Hud Gelein and Rafael Gomez homered for the Bears to lead the way in the game that locked up the title. Phil Borders homered with two-on in the seventh Inning to give Wenatchee its win in the second game. A three-run round tripper by catcher Gordon MacKenzie provided Lewiston with its win in the opener and Tri-City grab bed off the nightcap by ex ploding for five runs in the first inning. Terry Barber and Dick Kai mcs each went the route on the mound for Salem to pace the Dodgers to their wins. tackle Denny Ryerson, another fine performer. Turner has "real good hands' and a Comet objective will be to get the ball to him through the air. 61 Lettermen At Duck Drill Eugene (UPI) Sixty - one players, headed by all-American halfback Mel Renfro and in cluding 18 other lettermen, were on hand as the Oregon Ducks held their first practice session here Sunday. Coach Len Casanova, who is in his 13th season at Oregon, sent his team through a two hour workout. Two sophomores, fullback Bud Harrington and guard Jim Richko. told Casanova that they would be unable to play this fall because of medical problems. TRADE DRAFT CHOICES Buffalo, N. Y. (UPD The Buffalo Bills of the American Football League have traded two high draft players to the Denver Broncos in exchange for offensive tackle Harold Olson. Miss Ellis had set her mark of 1:06.5 just two weeks ago. 1 Phone 772-6157 Chargers Show Best Pre-League Record United Press International The San Diego Chargers, who won only four of 14 games in the American Football league last season, apparently won't be such pushovers this year. The Chargers wound up with the best record among AFL clubs in pre-season games, win ning four and losing one. The Buffalo Bills finished sec ond in the exhibition standings with a 3-1 mark. They were fol lowed by the Oakland Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Oilers with identical 3-2 records. Bringing up the rear of the eight-team league were the Den ver Broncos (2-3), the New York Jets (1-3) and the Boston Pa triots (0-5). The Chargers, led by Tobin Rote, a National Football league castoff, completed their exhibi tion slate with a 13-3 victory over the Oakland Raiders Sat urday night.
