MturuhU MAIL THiounc. KiuiunU, oticiaON THURSDAY, AUGUST 29. 1963 Scientist Charts Early Wanderings Of Magnetic Poles Berkeley-The crimcvali stance, is thought to wanderings of the earth's "floated" as far as 4,000 miles, magnetic poles are being! Prof. Watkins and others, mapped by a Stanford Uni-1 skeptical of this idea, believe vcrsity aeophvsieist throneh that the wandering pok-s of- have study of the Miocene lava flows of southern Oregon. Research by Prof. Norman D. Watkins reveals that loca tion of the poles from Oregon varied over 60 degrees of the compass during the Miocene period, 10-30 million years a 20. In fact the two poles "flipped," he said, the North Pole becoming the South and vice versa. Prof. Watkins reported his findings at the current meet ings of the International Un ion of Geodesy and Geophs ics being held at the Univer sity of California. His work has been supported by the Air Force and the National Science Foundation, plus co operation in the research from the U.S. Geological Sur vey of Menlo Park. When the hot lavas flowed from the earth in prehistoric southern Oregon. Prof. Wat kins explained, they came un der the influence of the earth's magnetic poles. And as each of these molten mag mas cooled into basalt, the direction of the earth's po larity at that time was "froz en" into it. Using extremely sensitive Instruments, the Stanford geo physicist was able to deter mine these directions from rock cores drilled out of the basalt. Me investigated 200 such lava flows spewed up during the Miocene period. Magnetic Polarity Other scientists have at tempted to explain the vary ing direction of magnetic po larity in rocks on the basis of "continental drift." This theory postulates that whole continents have shifted position due to forces origi nating in the earth's fluid. molten interior. India, for in fer a more plausible explana tion He offers in evidence core samples of successive Oregon lava flows, laid one on top of another. Yet their polarity shows different directions. Furthermore, in both age and magnetic direction, these rocks closely resemble core samples previously taken from flows at different loca tions in New Zealand. Continental drift could not have changed the position of the Oregon flows relative to each other. And the fact that they match the New Zealand flows indicates the two con tinents must have remained stationary, while the poles did the drifting. His samples indicate consid erable "oscillations" of pole positions in well defined di rections, Prof. Watkins said, in addition to their complete 180-degree reversal. Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF Five Fires Noted In State Forests Salem-IUTO-A 100-acre grass and watershed blaze eight miles east of Canyonville was among five fires noted yester day on state protected forest and rangelagds, the State For estry department said today. If so. none seem to have manifested themselves to the Kennedys as yet, at any rate. But former President Truman, Mrs. Coolidge, and Mrs. Roosevelt all reported apparitions of Abraham Lincoln, and other strange occurrences never under oath, how ever. It is a matter of record that when Queen Wilhelmina of the Neth erlands was a guest at the White House, she swore that she saw Mrs. Lincoln march straight into her drawing room and fainted dead away. Mrs. Woodrow Wilson was convinced that the ghost of Dolly Madison dropped in one evening to pay her respects. Even Winston Churchill reported strange noises and visitations while he stayed at the White House during World War II (.for top secret conferences with F.D.R. and Harry Hopkins). Maybe these are the very ghosts who arc writing those so-called "inside stories'" of doings in top Washington echelons? Way back in 175S, this item appeared in Benjamin Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanac': "Laziness travels so slowly that pov erty soon overtakes him. We may make these times better if we bestir ourselves. There are no gains without pains." Secularism Said Growing in U.S. Los Angeles tUPI Evange list Billy Graham said Wednes day there might be a huge march on Washington that would dwarf the civil rights march if the U.S. Supreme Court "continues its trend to ward throwing God and the Bible out of our national life." Graham told 28.651 persons attending the 12th session of his three-week crusade that "secularism is the fastest growing religion in America." "Whether those who call themselves secularists agree to it or not, it is a faith and a religion," he said, "even though it claims to want to throw off .the shackles of re ligion." - But Graham said "if a vote were taken today, it would be A 5 found that 90 per cent of the American people want their children exposed to prayers and Bible reading in school."
