Citizens Committee Told That Changes Influence Building There are changes going on in education today that will Influence the type of school building a district chooses to be constructed, Amo DeBer nardis, assistant superinten dent of the Portland schools, told members of the Citizens' Advisory Committee of Med- ford Tuesday night Describing the M e d f o r d committee, which is studying secondary school needs, as democracy in action," the visiting speaker urged the committee members to be re alistic. "The building will influ ence education," he declared. "You can put a top notch teacher in a tent and she will still do a good job, I'll agree to that," he added. "But put a top notch teacher in a plant designed foi education and she'll do a better job." Achievement is only one of the things the school must do to be effective, DeBernar dis said. Other requisites, he listed as, a physical fitness program, citizenship, eco nomics and vocation. Concerned About Today "Citizenship," the speaker What Next for' L 1 Sandra Dee? I don't mean Just teaching the children to name the senators and representa tives and so on. This is knowl edge. What we mean is the development of his attitude to ward his government. ' "In the field of vocation," DeBernardis con tinued, "I hope we are going to start soon, very soon, to get the child to take a good look at himself and say this is what I am going to do and this is the school that is going to help me do it." Turning again to building construction, DeBernardis de scribed the studying done in Portland preparatory to the planning for the proposed Southwest Portland High school which is designed for the education of 2,400 students. Put Into Practice "In this building. Portland has tried to put into practice the things we've been talking about. We want to make it a place that parents also, will come to," DeBernardis explained. The new methods of pre sentation of materials, the importance of having the teacher know her students. of having the students feel known by the teacher, the ad vantages of flexible grouping and of releasing the student to learn on his own, when he is capable of accepting this responsibility were all considered, the Portland school administrator em phi sized, in the planning of the Southwest High school Dividing the students into separate student bodies with in the same building has made it possible to consider the education of a great nunv ber while retaining the ad vantages offered by a small student body. The process ex plained by DeBernardis re sembled closely constructions in the east visited by the Med ford delegation and the state board of education on tours financed by the Oregon Pro gram. Ce-Edlter of Beek DeBernardis is one of the editors of "Planning Schools for New Media," prepared in cooperation with the U.S. de partment of health, education and welfare, and copies of this book were presented to committee members at the close of Tuesday night's meet ing, over which H. P. Bos worth, Jr., committee chair man, presided. The speaker was Intro duced by Dr. Leonard B. May- field, superintendent of Med ford schools, who emphasized the extensive work DeBernar dis has done in the fields of planning for the new con cepts in education. Preceding preseataMen of the speaker, Dr. David C. Pudgy-faced, with eyes that shift. Hard minds, fixed on the business that's always at hand. These men rule. Their kingdoms are eight major cities, plus the near and far suburbs that ring them. Their overall cartel of crime is a shadowy substance called "Cosa Nostra." No hard alliance here - except for re curring family ties. Just an "understanding, the snarling palship of big cats that prey in a common jungle. ! These men are the "com t mission" that presides over or ganized crime in the United States, according to the Jus tice Department. The infor mation has been coming for some time from a former Cosa Nostra member, Joe Valachi, a frightened man in an army fort. Depending on which paper you read, Valachi is "Sing ing Joe," "The Talking Ter rorist," "The Singsong Hood lum," or "The Blabbermouth of Cosa Nostra." But his song is not so funny. A quarter-century ago, an other singer named Abe Reles began a roundelay about a kill-for-hire mob in Brooklyn called Murder, Inc. In 19-11, in mid-song, Reles went out the window of a Coney Island hotel to his death, while guarded by police. And spawned an underworld say ing: "This was one canary who could sing but couldn't fly." Hence the placement of Abbandando, Kid Twist Reles, business. Their overall take in Legitimate Husiimess Lcpke Buchaller. Valachi's overlords have no such nonsense about them. To day's crop, underworld busi nessmen of distinction, born mostly in Sicily and Ilaiy, are described as sincere, affable; one looks like a retired gentle man, another like "a kindly old grandfather." Cosa Nostra is an Italian idiom meaning "our business, Valachi in heavily guarded J our affair." Their business is Ft. Monmouth, N.J.
