Local and Arrest Shoplifter - A 14-year-old juvenile, arrested by Medford police for shoplift ing at the Payless Drug store in the Medford Shopping Center, was released to his mother with approval of ju venile authorities, according to police. Jacksonville Council - The Jacksonville city council will meet at 8 o'clock tonight in en adjourned meeting to take up unfinished business held over from a regular meeting last week. Grass Fire - The Talent Rural Fire department was called out at 4 p.m. Mondav to extinguish a grass fire at the Lee Quinn home on Sun crest rd. The fire was started accidentally in some weeds that had been cut. Car Damaged - Herbert Walter Wheeler of Sacra mento, Calif., reported to Medford police that a real estate sign was shoved through the top of his 1958 convertible while it was park ed on a Medford street. The plastic top was badly dam aged. Patient Flown - Emery Caldwell, 921 Grant St., was flown to Bremerton Naval hospital, Bremerton, Wash., Monday by Mercy Flights Inc., for additional surgery. Cald well was the 1,614th patient to be flown by the non-profit air ambulance service since it was started. Building Permits-Hal Hag erman was issued a permit by the Medford building depart ment Monday to erect an ad dition to a building at 2137 East Jackson blvd. A S500 permit was issued to the VFW for repair of a roof at 42 North Front St., and a $200 permit to Henry Johnson for erection of a greenhouse at 819 King st. J Ij ;'' HOT LINE EQUIPMENT - Equipment for the emergency communications line that will link Moscow and Washington was moved into the office of the Joint Chiefs of OBITUARIES NITA WHITAKER Nita Whitaker, 3-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Whitaker, 611 Chestnut St., died yesterday in a local hos pital. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Conger Morris Funeral directors. MRS. JEAN BYERS Ashland Mrs. Jean Ursela Byers, 76, of 425 South Moun tain ave., died early this morning in an Ashland nurs ing home after an extended illness. She had lived in Ash land for 55 years. Mrs. Byers was born Sept. 1, 1886, in Moundsville, Mo. With her husband, Paul Byers, she observed their 30th wedding anniversary, Aug. 24. She was a member of the Ashland Methodist church where she had sung in the choir for 50 years, and also was a member of the Ameri can Legion auxiliary. In addition to her husband, she is survived by three broth ers, Arch Anderson, El (Jen- tro, Calif.; Campbell Ander son, Harrison, Ark., and Oli sister, Mrs. Ruth Mitchell, Portland, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be an nounced by Litwiller Funeral home. JESSIE A. MYERS Private funeral services for Jessie A. Myers, 83, of 315 South Orange St., who died Sunday, were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Perl Funeral home. Dr. D. K. West, pastor of First Presbyterian church, officiated. Interment was in Siskiyou Memorial park. Mrs. Myers was born Sept. 26, 1879, in Blue Earth, Minn. She has lived in Medford for the past 54 years. On Feb. 4, 1904, in Blue Earth she was married to Jack Wakefield, who died in 1938. In 1939 in Medford, she was married to Charley Myers, who died in 1954. She was a member of First Presbyterian church, the order of the East ern Star and Daughters of the Nile. WILLIAM SCHMIDT Funeral services for Wil liam Schmidt, 83, of route 3, i box 169N, Medford, who died Sunday, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Chapel J in the Trees mortuary, in Sis- kiyou Memorial park. j Pastor Vernon R. Hanson of the Ascension Lutheran church of Medford will offici ate. Private interment will follow in Siskiyou Memorial park. Mr. Schmidt was born March 26, 1880, in Germany. On July 3, 1949, in Reno, Nov., he was married to Flor ence R. Alaback, who sur vives. The family has been residents of Oregon, and of this community for the past 30 years. Mr. Schmidt was baptized in the Lutheran church. He had been a construction con tractor, and had done cabinet building most of his life. He had owned and operated a tree farm in this area known as Oregon Switzerland, and in 1900 sold the farm to the Girl Scouts for their camp which is now known as Tom- lin Forest. Survivors, besides his wife, include two sisters in Ger many; one niece, and three nephews. Honorary pallbearers will include Dwight Houghton, William Frazier, Frank Hasel ton, Jennings Covington, Rick Kenner, and Ross Twedell. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Siskiyou Funeral Service, directors of Chapel in the Trees mortuary. RICHARD T. McNICHOLAS Funeral services for Rich ard T. McNicholas, 88, of 47 Renault ave., who died Sun day, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Perl Funeral home. The Rev. George R. V. Bol ster, rector of St. Mark's Epis copal church will officiate. Interment in Glendale ceme tery will be private. Mr. McNicholas was born Aug. 12, 1875, in Salem, Ore. He was self employed as a mining engineer. For the past 20 years he has lived in Med ford and Portland. On Dec. 24, 1905, in Port land he was married to Dal las S. Miller, who survives. Other survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Mamie G. Bar nard, Medford; one son, Harry R. McNicholas, Fresno, Calif.; seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Casket bearers will be Ross Gilkison, John Ross, Richard E. Payne, Jake Covey. Three Appear in Circuit Court Here Frank Homer Bledsoe, 36, of 2017 Suzanna st., was placed on probation in Jack son county circuit court Mon day for obtaining property by false pretenses and a one year county jail sentence was sus pended. He had pleaded guilty to charges of issuing a bad check to a local firm. John D. Abel, 52, Giants Pass, pleaded innocent to a charge of forgery. A psychia tric examination was ordered upon request of Abel's attor ney. Her sen- Crews Extinguish Twelve Small Fires By United Press International Twelve small fires were re ported in Oregon Monday by the State Forestry department and the U.S. Forest Service.
