BROOKS Unittd Proit International New York (UPD If furnace care seems an unappealing topic for a warm summer day think how downright dis tasteful it could be on a cold winter's night. Like any other piece of me chanical equipment, a fur nace must be maintained to insure peak performance and avert breakdown at a critical time. The logical time to check its operation is before it goes on fulltime duty in the autumn. The heating experts t Minneapolis-Honeywell warn the self-styled handyman to leave adjustment of his auto matic fuel burner to the skilled serviceman with the right instruments and know how. But they have a list of heating maintenance tasks that the average handy home owner can undertake to as sure comfortable, reliable and clean heat this winter: Replace Filter Replace the throw-away filter or clean the reusable type on a forced warm air furnace. Honeywell advises this be done at least twice a year. Electronic air cleaners should be cleaned, carefully following the manufacturer's washing instructions. When installing filters, be sure the air flows through them in the direction of the arrows on the side of the filter frame. Clean the return air sec tion of the furnace at the same time you clean the fil ters and the blower, a source of dirt that can get up into the house. Lubricate the bearings on all motors, the blower or circulator. Don't douse the bearing with oil a few drops is enough. And check first some bearings require grease instead of oil. Replace the belt between motor and blower on a forecd warm air furnace if the old one shows signs of wear. Check Pilot Light Check the pilot light if a gas-fired furnace or boiler fails to start when the ther mostat is turned up. If it is out, light it yourself only by following the instructions posted on the furnace. Use a long taper instead of a match. If there are no instructions, call a heating service man or your local utility company, Start an oil burner from the thermostat. If it doesn't keep burning, check to see if the electrical switches con trolling the burner circuit are on, the fuses good and that there is oil in the tank. If there is a "recycle" button on the primary burner con trol, press it once. If the bur ner doesn't start and con tinue running, call a service man. Check the thermostat. Those with open contacts can be cleaned if you're not all thumbs by lightly passing a hard-surfaced card between the contacts a few times with the thermostat-indicator level set at the top of the scale. Many thermostats have con tacts enclosed in a small glass envelope and require no cleaning. Air From Radiator! Vent air from the radiators of a hot water heating system by opening the small vent valve on the radiator until water flows from it. Then close it. Do this to any other vent valves in the system also. Give the furnace or boiler breathing air. If you notice a smell in the house near the heater while it is on, open an adjacent window to see if the odor disappears. If it does, the heater needs more air. On a forced warm air system, this can be provided by run ning a small pipe from an outside wall to the return air duct. A partially opened win dow is suggested for a hot water system. Honeywell experts advise that you be particularly sus picious of insufficient com bustion if the heater is In a small or tight enclosure such as utility room, or in a room walled off from the rest of the basement.
