Volcanic Crater
Erupts in Hawaii
Volcano Observatory, Ha
waii - Him - A small volcanic
crater burst into activity on
the island of Hawaii Wednes
day night, giving spectators
a close-up view of a volcano
in action.
The eruption started about
midnight along the east wall
of Alealea crater in the chain
of craters on Kilauea vol
cano. Kilauea is a separate
volcano which appears to
sprout from the south shores
of famed Mauna Loa.
fountains of lava, ranging
in color from deep red to
nearly white, spurted 25 to
75 feet into the air in a chain
of fire from near the top edge
of the crater rim to about
halfway down the side.
Within three hours, the
floor of the crater - about 100
yards wide and 20 feet deep,
was covered with molten lava
and the flow was continuing
at a steady pace.

Federal Power Bill
Clears Committee
Washington - IUPD - The
House Rules committee today
cleared legislation to give the
Pacific Northwest first call
on federal power produced in
the area.
The bill, already passed by
the Senate but amended by
the House Interior committee,
was cleared for two hours of
debate and for a vote by the
House.
The legislation was designed
to pave the way for construc
tion of transmission lines to
carry surplus power from fed
eral dams in the Pacific
Northwest to California.
However, the House version
of the bill would require the
Interior Department to get
congressional approval for the
construction of federal trans-1
mission lines outside the Pa-!
cific Northwest. I
