A comparison of climates as compared to various places in Norway where the mink building design and construc air conditioners in their cars, united Press International Washington - OJPD - There are now more than 12,000 voluntary, unpaid observers in the United States who re cord weather data every day. Most of their work con sists of making a simple, climatological observation such as measuring rainfall or snowfall, checking the high and low temperatures, re cording this data and mailing it to the nearest weather bureau. Does anyone use this data? Do the observations serve any satisfy scientific curiosity? The answer is an emphatic "yes," by J. H. Hagarty, head of the Office of Climatology of the U. S. Weather Bureau. He said the bureau receives many requests for data. The requests are examined to de termine the area in question, length of record needed and specific weather elements in volved. The required data, or the next best substitute, are then collected, examined and furnished to the applicant. Hagarty said sometimes the information seeker is not sure just what to ask for and just Hagarty has compiled many Analyzing the effect of of the ways in which weather climate on a construction pro records from the observers ject in New Mexico, may be used. Selection of a crop to be planted, or of a particular crop to be grown may depend upon temperature data. First Factor Temperature is one of the first factors considered by persons in selecting a retire ment climate. Persons with particular health conditions also consider temperature data in selecting a domicile. Hagarty said other uses are to compute snow-melt rates over a watershed for which dams are being planned, to determine the need of insur ance company personnel for plan for the building of swim ming pools. Precipitation records have been used to determine the size of the roof in an area where drinking water comes from the rainfall, Hagarty said. These records also have been used in drought studies and in the determination of drought disaster areas, and in the design of highway and airport drainage systems, storm sewers and irrigation canals. Hagarty said that without the corps of volunteer observ ers, "the myriad weather might become a problem, in an effort to control them. Hagarty said an interest ing use of temperature data is to attempt to determine if the climate actually is chang ing, and if so, in what way. Accurate temperature read ings are vital to such studies, and these readings should be made under virtually un changed conditions over a long period of time. Hagarty said fuel suppliers base their operations on temp eratures. So do those con cerned with home and other THE DANMOORE HOTEL 1217 SW Mormon St. PORTLAND, OREGON All transient f ueitt. Jeremiah Stamler and his associates made a study of 275 men under the aBe . I of 50 who had Ir I had one or attacks : o r onary i neart disease. The result was that the mortality rates in the treated group were reduced by about half. Other similar studies, such as those of J. Marmorston and his associates also indicat ed that treatment of this type can reduce the tendency of a heart attack to return. One objection is that some men object to the loss of sexual potency that results. 'As so often happens in sci ence, about the time we doc tors think we know some thing, along comes another man who says, "I repeated that work aand got a different result. Hence it was that I was not surprised on hearing of the five-year study by Drs. Oliver and Boyd of England wjio said their results of giv ing an estrogen to men were disappointing. Perhaps they used the wrong brand of estro gen an ethnyl estradiol. Ob viously what is needed now are more studies in which a large group of men are used as subjects. Treatment for Burns : In answer to the persons who have asked me what is the best emergency treatment for a person who has received a. bad burn. I will say that in the JAMA I find a paper bv Drs. T C. King and P. B. Price, who say that years ago manv grandmothers had the right idea when they quickly put cold water compresses on burned areas of the skin. Cold water helps the body to organize resistance against the local injury of the burns. The cooling of the injured tissues appears to turn the tide in favor of the badly burned person, so that he will recover when, otherwise, he might lose his life.
