8 A WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 21. 19(3 Cardinal By 7-5 Triumph of By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Spoilt wrutr Bve bve. Redbirds. That was about the size of it for the cooled-off Cardinals today after the high -riding Dodgers beat them. 7-3, rues- day night to increase their National league ieaa io ovi games. The Cardinals came Into Los Angeles filled with pen nant ideas following their three straight victories over the stumbling San Francisco Giants, One misDlav killed all those ideas and the unfor tunate victim was first base man Bill White, ordinarily one of the finest players in the circuit. Here was the situation: The Dodgers trailed, 4-2, in the fourth inning and had runners on first and second when John Roseboro ground' ed to White. Trying to force speedy Wll- lie Davis at second, White threw the ball into center field, enabling Frank Howard to score from second and Davis all the way from first on the error. Before the inning was over, the Dodgers rallied for five runs and that was the ball game. Giants Lot The Giants, meanwhile, fell 7V4 games off the pace by dropping a 6-1 decision to the Braves. The Reds beat the Colts, 1-0, the Mets ended the Phllies' eight -game winning streak with a 4-0 victory in the opener of a twin-bill but lost the nightcap, 2-1, in 12 innings and the Pirates de feated the Cubs, 5-3. Lee Maye's three-run horn' er in the seventh inning cap ped a five - run rally that Bobby Bra gar. Says SF About Out of Race By HAL WOOD . San Francisco (UTO - The San Francisco Giants, in the throes of another losing streak, can just about be counted out of the 1963 Na tiona league pennant chase. Take the word of Milwau kee manager Bobby Bragan whose Braves handed the Giants their fourth consecu tive loss, 6-1, Tuesday night, "I would say that the Los Angeles Dodgers have a com manding position in the race," said Bragan, which was a con. servative estimate. The Dodg ers hold 16W game lead over the second place St. Louis Cardinals and 7'4 over the defending league champions, the Giants. Don't Have Pitching "I don't think San Francis co will get back in the race because they don't seem to have the pitching. Billy Pierce and Jack Sanford, who won 40 games between them last year, are having an off-season." That's putting it mildly. Pierce, who pitched beautiful ball for six innings Tuesday night and had a 1-0 lead, fold ed completely in the seventh when the first three men singled. Bob Bolin came in to hurl relief - and like all Giants' relievers lately, tossed home run ball that clinched the contest for the Braves. Pierce now has won only three games all season against nine defeats. Last year he won 16 and was unbeaten in Candlestick Park. Koufax Seeks 20th Victory Br PAUL CORCORAN Los Angeles - WD- Sandy Koufax makes his bid to night to become the first major leaguer to win 20 games this season, 24 hours after a Met fugitive named Bob Miller reached a hitherto un dreamed of plateau of eight victories. Regardless of how the bril liant Koufax is, it's improb able he'll do much better than Miller did Tuesday night with five scoreless innings of re lief pitching that enabled the firstplace Dodgers to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-5. Koufax has veteran Curt Simmons, 11-6, as his Cardinal mound rival tonight. On Hit "I think I pitched as well as I have all year," Miller said after his five-Inning stint in which he yielded only one hit, struck out six and walked single batter. Manager Walt Alston, ex tremely pleased, didn't dis pute the young right hander who once performed for the Cardinals - until the Mets shelled out $125,000 in the 1961 player draft at the time the Houston and New York franchises were stocked with journeymen performers. -Miller was 1-12 last year, but the Dodgers bartered for him to fill in for Stan Wll liams, who was traded for Bill Skowron of the Yanks. Chances brought the Braves their vic tory over the Giants. Vada Pinson's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning scored Pete Rose with the only run of the Cincinnati - Houston game. Rookie Grover Powell, mak ing his first major league start for the Mets, held the Phils to four hits in the opener to beat veteran Cal McLish. Tony Taylor's run-producing single in the 12th inning snapped a 1 all tie in the nightcap, Home runs by Jerry Lynch, Bill Mazeroski and Jim Pag liaroni paced the Pirates to their victory over the Cubs. Dick Williams fired a three- hitter to give Roseburg the championship In the six-day, double-elimination playoffs. The host club posted a 4-1 record, beating Billings in two of three tries. OREGON Hurlers In American Loop On Tuesday Night By MILTON RICHMAN UPI Sports Writer Whatta mess! That's the only way to de scribe the entire American league situation. A lopsided race is one thing, but who ever heard of the pitchers still being ahead of the hitters in late August? It's different in spring train ing where the hitters can claim they're rusty from the long winter lay-off, but what excuse can they offer now af ter five months to sharpen their batting eyes? Oh well, maybe things will all even up by Thanksgiving Day. Tuesday night, however, it was strictly one-sided and the pitchers had a ball. Hurls One-Hitler Moe Drabowsky of Kansas City, for example, beat Wash ington, 9-0, on a one-hitter in the first game of a twi-night doubleheader and the A's also took the 14-inning nightcap, 7-5. Southpaw Hank Aguirre hurled a two-hitter for Detroit in a 6-0 victory over Minne sota, while another left-hander, Juan Pizarro of the White Sox, retired 24 batters in or der en route to a 10-2 tri umph over the Red Sox. Veteran Dick Donovan came up with some brilliant clutch pitching also in lead ing the Indians to a 2-1 win over the Yankees. Even with the loss the Yankees still lead the league by 9'4 games. The Baltimore-Los Angeles game was postponed because of rain with the Orioles ahead, 4-1, after four innings. Gets Bunt Single Don Blasingame s bunt sin gle in the fourth inning was the only hit given up by Dra bowsky as he coasted to his fifth victory behind a la-nlt Kansas City attack. Jerry Lumpe gave the A's a sweep when he homered with one on off reliever Don Rudolph in the 14th inning of the night cap. Aeuirre yielded a leaaoii single to Lennie Green of the Twins in the first inning and didn't allow another hit until Harmon Killebrew singled in the seventh. Pizarro's effort was similar to Aguirre's although the Red PRICES CUT... During Our ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION BEAVER ELECTRIC PLUMBING SUPPLY 2740 North e " Have Ball Sox nicked him for five hits. Felix Mantilla got Boston's first hit in the opening frame after which Pizarro retired 24 batters in order before the Red Sox put together four more singles for both their runs in the ninth. Pizarro drove in three runs with as many hits. Donovan really had to work to nail down his ninth victory against the Yankees, who filled the bases with one out in the ninth. But the Cleve land righthander got pinch hitter Yogi Berra to bounce into a game -ending double play. Vic Davalillo's infield single with the bases full drove in the winning run for the Indians in the top of the ninth.
