I Mrs. D. E. - A boy and his lather should be friends. a Helen Z. - Mai is 10 and I've been divorced from his father for a year. I've come to dread the Sunday visits, as find they do Mai no good and often give him a head ache, nausea, and a troubled night. Now that my ex-husband is planning to remarry, he won't mind it a bit if we drop those Sunday duty calls, and Mai will have some peace. Mrs. D. E. - As Helen's mother, I'm urging her to en courage a strong bond be tween Mai and his dad. She'll be making a worse mess ol things than she's already done if she lets an estrangement grow between the two - it's a serious thing to deprive a boy ol his male parent. If she had a brother as substitute it might work, but Mai needs his father. The Council: Helen must never forget that Mai knows he carries his father's "blood" within him and he must be proud of that blood. By be littling, depreciating, dimin ishing her ex-husband she may be subtly conveying to Mai the idea that this blood is tainted. If so, he'll feel doomed and hopeless. Regard less of her own opinions, this man and she have shared in producing Mai. He's a fact, not an opinion. Both his moth er and father can find guid ance on "how to act" looking at him and seeing what atti tudes build him up, strength en him, make him feel like other kids . . . Maybe the father he meets once a week isn't the type they pin medals on, come Father's Day, but chances are he has a more personal stake in Mai than any other masculine compan ion Helen can provide . . . For a more pleasant relation ship, Helen would be helped by an organization like Par ents Without Partners, Inc., which offers therapeutic coun seling facilities. Her bitter ness toward her ex-mate would be diverted from harm ing Mai. And the boy could join pre-teen groups which concentrate on Getting Along with Dads. 4-H NEWS Weitside Home Improvement Members of the Westside Home Improvement 4-H club enjoyed a week end of camp ing at Woodruff meadows re cently with Mrs. Walter Ricks, club leader, and her husband, in charge. Other activities included a trip to Abbott Butte lookout, swimming, singing and a pot luck luncheon for parents and members. Conny Varncr, Reporter Exploratory Gatbags Dennis the Menace Trial Balloons Appear on As National Conventions Washington-il)Pli-In politics, it is important to be able to distinguish between a trial balloon and a lead balloon. Many a poli t i c i a n has turned loose what he thought was a trial balloon only to have it drop on his foot and frac- West tirre a couple of tootsies. Others have been known to rupture their lungs trying to blow air into the uninflatable variety. Despite such hazards, how ever, it appears that, we are in for a rather active balloon season during the next few months. The 1964 national conventions are still about a year away and already a cou ple of exploratory gasbags have appeared on the hori zon. Losing Altitude When last seen they were losing altitude fast. Apparent ly the launchers were unable to get all the lead out. Trial balloons have one thing in common-a certain amount of flatulence. Beyond that they may vary widely in shape and size. Possibly there are a num ber of children, and may be a few under-privileged adults, who have never seen a trial balloon. For their benefit, and for others who may need a re fresher course in trial balloon recognition, I shall undertake i to list the Identifying features of some of the more familiar types. The kev word there, the one that stamps it as the work of a trial balloonist, is "quietly" 'Bad Boy' Killer Released on Parole Salem - (UPII - Dupree Poe, 61, convicted killer and one time "bad boy" of the Oregon State Penitentiary, was re leased on parole last week, the State Parole and Probation Board confirmed Tuesday. Poe was convicted of the 1931 slaying of City Marshal Hans Iverson during a rob bery at Silverton. He entered the state prison in 1932. Parole officials said Poe is now doing clerical work at a warehouse "somewhere in the Northwest." "Poe has no family, and we had a problem finding a parole plan for him," the of ficial said. COLLECTIONS ANNOUNCED Salem-UJPIl - State-wide col lections by the Welfare Re covery Division of the State Department of Justice totaled $49,823 in July, Atty. Gen. Robert Y. Thornton said Tuesday. Lungbuster had quiet ly passed the word that he would not accept second place on the ticket." Finally we have "Sen. Lung buster, often mentioned as a possible presidential candi date, announced today that he will seek re-election to the Senate instead." Alaska Bear Kills Mining Engineer Fairbanks, Alaska - (UN) William Strandberg, mining engineer and brother of State Rep. Harold Strandberg, was killed by a bear late Friday near Tofty, about 150 miles west of here, the State Police reported today. The hundreds of deep fiords that cut into Norway's coast line give it an over-all ocean front of more than 12.000 miles. Almost 150,000 islands off the coast form a natural break water and thereby a safe coastal shipping channel. Fyrstckake (Cake Royal) is a butter-rich, almond-filled cake that is understandably favorite of the Norwegians and likely to be a favorite of anyone else who is fortunate enough to taste it. Vj pound butter 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking pow der '2 cup sugar 1 egg pound blanched al monds, cut fine 2 cups powdered sugar 1 egg white Wine or water. Cut butter into flour. Add baking powder, sugar, and beaten egg. Mix. Divide dough in two parts. Roll out one part to fit the pan and place in a greased 9xl2-inch bak ing pan to cover bottom of pan. Combine almonds, pow dered sugar, egg white, and enough wine) about three ta blespoons) to make spreading consistency. Mix well and spread over bottom layer of pan. Roll out second part of cake dough. Cut in strips about one inch wide with cookie wheel and place side by side on top of the filling. Bake in a medium, 375 de gree, oven 30 to 35 minutes, until lightly browned. Makes 12 servings. . Air-Condition Meals With Chilled Soups When the weather is sizz ling, air-condition meals with icy-cold soups. Tomato-Herb Cooler. Com bine condensed tomato soup with milk or water; add chopped fresh or dried basil leaves. Soup Mist. Pour condensed beef broth, undiluted, and lemon juice over crushed ice. Minted Pea. Dilute con densed green pea soup with cold milk; add fresh or dried mint and blend thoroughly. Soup Swixtle. Combine cream of celery and cream of mushroom soup with 1 Vii cans cold milk. Beat to a froth. Serve with thin curls of lemon or cucumber. Cucumber Delight, Com bine cream of chicken soup with milk. Blend in finely chopped or grated cucumber.
