Director Resigns
Wcstport, Wash. -U1PD- The
Washington State Parks and
Recreation commission unan
imously accepted the resigna
tion of State Parks Director
Clayton E. Anderson at a
meeting here Monday.
Anderson, who resigned
Friday, had been under fire
from Gov. Albert D. Roscl
lini after reports during mor
ale and dissension in his de
partment. James Hovis, commission
chairman, told Anderson "we
appreciate the fine things you
did with us."
The commissioners asked
Anderson to remain with the
department an additional 60
days until a new director can
be selected and so that proj
ects already underway will
not be jeopardized. Anderson
said he would stay.

The Jackson County Horse-
mans association approved
the proposal for equestrian
signs and crossings presented
by Jack Brown, vice president
and chairman of the trail com
mittee. It was made after much ex
tensive investigation and con
sideration of the many haz
ards now encountered by the
riders enroute to the fair
grounds. According to Brown, the
committee feels that the three
main areas from which the
majority of horse riders come
are: Griffin Creek, West Side
School and the Lone Pine
areas. As of yet no safe route
has been found for the riders
from the Howard district to
the fairgrounds.
The committee decided
signs and crossings are need
ed at the following places:
Lone Fine district, Roberts
rd., Delta Waters rd., and
Grand View, plus crossing
marks and caution signs at

Usually we think of con
trolling perennial broadleaved
weeds with late spring appli
cations of chemicals.
Tests have proven highly
effective control can be had
with fall treatments if wea
ther conditions are such for
these plants to have good
growing conditions and are
still green. This being the case
such plants as sheep sorrel,
dock and morning glory will
make considerable growth in
the fall, building up reserves
for even greater growth in
the spring. Fall treatments
kill many of these plants and
weaken the growth of any of
the remaining plants the next
spring.
Two chemicals effective in
fall treatments are 2,4-D's
and a relatively new one
Banvel-D. Where spot treat
ments are to be made it is
suggested that heavier rates
of applications be used than
when selective sprays were
used in pasture, grass, or
grain fields.
Morning Glory
Where 2,4-D is to be used
in the fall, say on morning
glory control, two to six
pounds of the chemical should
be applied per acre in suffi
cient water to give thorough
coverage of all foliage. This
should be done at least 30
days before the first expected
frost and while the foliage is
green.
Sheep sorrel and dock con
trol can be achieved with ap
plication of one pound of

Fence rows and ditch banks
are a constant source of weed
seeds if not controlled and
should be considered if work
is to be done within the field.

and sometimes annoy city
people and Oregon tourists.
But like the smoke from
sawmills and industry smoke
stacks, it signals progress
hard at work bringing new
dollar into Oregon's econ
omy. Farmers burn seed fields
for a number of reasons all
of them aimed at improving
quality and quantity of the
state's $20 million annual seed
production for U.S. and world
markets.
U. S. DIET

per cent above the minimum

cent above in Japan and 11
