BURELSON'S REMODEL
Burleson's Ladies ready-to-wear store, at Main and Bartlett streets, has just been remod
eled, affording an inviting "back door" access for shoppers using the Park and Shop lot be
tween Bartlett and Riverside.
"This is but the first step in an complete remodeling program lor Burleson's'' Mrs.
Nunya Lizberg said Monday. "It is our planto improve the front and entire interior to
make our store more attractive and convenient."
Burleson's remodeling program is but one of several improvement projects slated lor
downtown Mcdford during 1963 and 1964.
Mosaic Parquet is manufactured exclusively by the White City company on special
machinery imported from Europe. In each 19x19 inch square unit there are 16 small
squares, each measuring 44 by AVt by 516 inches. Sales offices in southern California
are maintained by the new firm. Several local building concerns are featuring the prod
uct here.
GILBERT WILL RETIRE FROM WEYERHAEUSER. T. W. Gilbert of Tacoma will end
40 years with Weyerhaeuser Company Aug. 31 when he retires as land supervisor and
timber engineer.
Gilbert, 65, began his forestry career in 1923 at Centralia. Wash., as a compassman
and made his headquarters there for the next 31 years. He became a timber cruiser in
1925.
In 1930 Gilbert was appointed regional land supervisor for Weyerhaeuser timber
lands in Western Oregon and portions of Southwest Washington. He was given addi
tional duties as chief cruiser in 1941 and timber engineer in 1947.
In 1954 Gilbert moved to Weyerhaeuser's Tacoma headquarters to become land super
visor while retaining responsibilities as timber engineer.
Gilbert's long service and contributions to management of timberlands were recognized
formally in 1959 when the company named for him a forestry research proving ground near
Centralia.
He received an additional honor Wednesday (Aug. 14) when a new state fire lookout
lower was officially dedicated as the Ted Gilbert Lookout. Located on Ted Gilbert Ridge
of the St. Helen's Tree Farm, the tower replaces one damaged by last October's Typhoon
Frieda.
FIRESTONE STORE HERE WINS AWARD. Mr. and
Mrs. Virgil Wridge returned recently from Akron, Ohio,
where they were guests of the Firestone Tire and Rubber
Company. The trip was in recognition of the Medford store's
winning top honors in the nation in Firestone's "President
Challenge Contest." Wridge is manager of the store at Ninth
and Riverside.
The Wridges were welcomed personally by President
Raymond C. Firestone of the Firestone Tire and Rubber
Company and, while in Akron, they enjoyed special enter
tainment as guests of the company and toured the big tire
plant, inspected the development and testing center and
visited the Firestone test farm.
DEPARTMENT STORE HEADS OPTIMISTIC. Major
department stores will generally show Increases in second
quarter earnings and sales, a Fairchild News Service poll
indicates. George E. Troutt, vice president and treasurer,
Associated Dry Goods, New York, is optimistic both on sec
ond quarter figures and the outlook for the rest of the year.
Ralph F. Waltz, vice president, Allied Stores Corp., New
York says second quarter earnings "will definitely be im
proved over those posted in the first quarter." Mr. Waltz
adds that "the business climate looks excellent for the bal
ance of the year." He says, "It looks very good as far as
sales are concerned, and we expect a favorable increase in
sales and profits for fall, 1963." In St. Louis, most major
stores sav sales volume for the first half of 1963 showed a
10 increase over last year. San Francisco department and specialty store heads indicate
earnings are up, some as high as 5, for the first half. In Cleveland, the second quarter of
1963 should show a marked improvement for department stores over first quarter profits.
HARDWARE DEALERS URGED TO EXAMINE SPORTING GOODS MARKET. The
American consumer will spend more than $23 billion on sporting good in 1963. reports
Hardware Retailer. This fall, people with more leisure time will be looking for something
new and different. Guns, archery equipment, bowling balls, ice skates, skis or accessories
connected with any of these winter sporting goods are but a few of the items they'll be
buying. However, says Hardware Retailer, discounters, drug stores, supermarkets, chain
stores and sporting goods specialists will all be out after a greater share of this giant mar
ket. The magazine urges dealers to examine their own market. Speaking of sports. Hard
ware Retailer reports that golf offers a long season and mass market appeal. Golf equip
ment .!$ should hit $137 million this year, up from $124 million in 1962. There are now
an estM8Ial E eatllion golfers and the number is growing.
