Penny, Peter, and David, 401 Oregon, terrace, Medford, are back from a three weeks visit in Boston, Mass. While there they visited with Mrs. Sage's mother, Mrs. Terese Kostare los, and other relatives. Miss Sage will remain in Boston until after Labor day. rj"raaft.jsll . Huff ": t 9 Charles Gelman Davis, (at left) Portland architect who designed the orchestra shell for the Peter Britt Gardens Music and Arts festival, now underway in Jacksonville for the first season, was present for the opening concert held last Sunday afternoon. Mr. Davis is pictured here with Mrs. Davis and Walter Daggett. Portland, who attended the concert with Mr. and Mrs. Davis. The festi val will continue through Saturday. August 24. Rose Gardens Made Ready for Festival Armed with pruning . shears, spray guns, and hoes, members of the Medford Rose society gathered at the Old Rose gardens in Jackson ville last week for a clean-up session in preparation for the Peter Britt Music festival. The Old Rose garden was planted by members of the Medford Rose society and given to the city of Jackson ville with the proviso that the city would water and maintain the garden, the Rose society to do the prun ing and spraying. ; Located near the old Meth odist church on Fifth street, across from the Jacksonville museum, the garden contains over 150 bushes of old rose varieties. Some of the bushes are from the Joseph B. Kern Rose nursery, Mentor, O., some from Will Tillotson's roses, Watsonville, Calif., and others from the private gardens of various individu als interested in the culture of old roses. Participating Members participating in the work brigade were Vaughn Quackenbush, soci icty president, and Mrs. Quackenbush; and the Ran ald Axtclls, charter members of the Medford Rose society. Mr. Axtcll is an apprentice rose judge and chairman of the fall rose show. He is also a grower and exhibitor of old garden roses. Mrs. Axtell is an accredited rose judge, member of the national com mittee on old garden roses and consulting Rosarian. Other Workers Clarence Miller, past presi dent, and Mrs. Miller, tea chairman for the June show; Mrs. Edith Updike, consult ing Rosarian and well-known rose grower, exhibitor and trophy winner, and Mrs. Ruth Boyd, charter member and first secretary for the so ciety and general chairman for the June rose show, were the other workers in the group. Later in the evening the group met at the Boyd home for a picnic supper in Mrs. Boyd's pink rose garden. Shower Honors Talent Woman Talent - Mrs. Charles Myers and Mrs. Tim Hunt were co hostesses recently for a show er honoring Mrs. Charles Van Blarcam, at the Myers home on First street. Because Mrs. Van Blarcam was unable to attend, the gifts were left unopened to deliver to her later. Games and re freshments were provided for the guests. Attend Reunion Talent - Mr. and Mrs. Her man Sommer, Holton road, and Mr. and Mrs. W. Leon Lockwood, Wagner creek, at tended a family reunion re cently at Scio. Winning east - west were Mrs. Bernard Hughes and Paul A. McDuffee, first, 132; Robert R. Dickey and Mr. Clark, second, 123 'i; the William Duhaimes, third, 118'i; Mrs. Ben Todd and Mrs. Marion Keim, fourth, 117V4. Mr. and Mrs. John Lake, Klamath Falls, were guest players. Teachers Visit At Weaver Home Miss Jean Larson, St. Hel ens, Ore., and Mrs. Thomas Mountain and her two daugh ters, Honolulu, Hawaii, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Weaver, 841 East Ninth street last week. Miss Larson is vice princi pal and dean of girls of the St. Helens High school and Mrs. Mountain is a teacher in the Honolulu city schools. Miss Larson, Mrs. Mountain (nee Edith Clark) and Mrs. Weaver formerly taught to gether in the Talent school in Jackson county. and Mrs. Clifton Green, 1786 Brookhurst street, Medford, are Mrs. Green's mother, brother and nephews. They are Mrs. Norman LeGrande, Lub bock, Tex., and Fred Winter and Russell and Brian Winter. Mr. Winter is basketball coach at Kansas State college, Manhattan, Kan., and is on the staff of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting at Southern Oregon college in Ashland this week. He will remain over the week end to attend the wed ding of Miss Patricia Bigham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bar ry B. Bigham, 1208 Murray avenue, Medford, to the Greens' son, Kenneth. The wedding is set for this evening at the Church of Christ, Medford, at 8 o'clock. A reunion of the Green family will be held Sunday. Dancers Cancel Event Saturday Applegate - Upper Apple gate Square Dancers will not hold the usual open dance on the third Saturday this month, because of the Far Western square dance jamboree being held in Eugene. The Wednesday night work shop will start again August 21 and continue regularly through fall. All square danc ers are welcome. Portland Pair Attend Festival Ashland - Guests last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Herndobler, 1SO0 Oregon street, were Mrs. Herndobler's aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. George Neilso'i, Portland. The visitors attend ed one of the Shakespearean plays before continuing their vacation to Bend. ft J jV - i-- j Mrs. Ruby Ralston, (center) Medford sculptress, was honored at a reception given to open the first show at Rogue gallery since renovation of ih. interior was com pleted several days ago. The current exhibit at ih. gallery, 220 West Main street, in cludes a number of works and sketches by Mrs. Ralston. Pictured with the sculptress are Gary Hendrix. art teacher at Hedrick Junior High school who arranged the show, and Mrs. Hendrix. Th. teacher is being praised for his ingenuity in combining the sculpture, pottery and a group of paintings from Medford's sister city. Alba, Italy, into a most pleasing arrangement. The gallery is open to the public Monday through Sat urday from 1 until 4 p.m. without charge. Because of its variety, and because of the special interest in the work of th. Italian artists, the exhibit is attracting more than the usual attention. Theta Rho Girls j Tour Oregon Caves Central Point - Beta Chi j chapter of Theta Rho Girls I club, with their advisors and families, toured the Oregon i caves recently and had a pic- nic at Grayback National for est camp. They completed the j day's activities with swim ming and a wiener roast at Lake Sclmac. Peter Britt Gardens Music festival now underway in Jacksonville. Earlier this summer h. was on the faculty for ih. Sun Valley Music camp in Idaho. Th. orchestra is scheduled for concerts tonight at 8 o'clock, Saturday at 4 and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 8 p.m. The Festival choir, directed by Lynn Sjolund and made up of valley singers, will present a concert Sunday at 4 p.m. For th. Sunday conc.rt, Mr. While will be soloist for a Mosart concerto for orchestra and French horn. Talent Women's Club Holds Work Session Talent - Eight members of the Talent Federated Wom en's club held an all-day work session recently at the home of Mrs. John Baldwin, North First street, to fold bandages, to be distributed by the Jack son County Cancer society, to cancer patients. With time out for a picnic lunch at noon, the women folded 400 small and 400 large pads. This was a special work session because of the need for such pads. Talent Federated Women's club Is a member of the Ore gon Federation of Women's clubs. Relatives Visit Ashland Family Ashland - Guests last week end al the Eldon Scripter home, 283 Scenic drive, were Mrs. Scripter's mother, Mrs. Laura Beach, Vancouver, Wash., and her brother and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beach and their two children, Eugene.
