Rogi ue River Trail Reg I ulations Limit Use to Hikers Only Portland - State and fed eral officials met with the bureau of land management here recently and agreed on rules limiting the Rogue Riv er trail to hikers only. The trail is between the Almeda bridge, about 30 miles north west of Grants Pass and Marial - a distance of 26 miles, BLM State Director Russell E. Getty announced. The trail which passes through BLM lands reserved for public recreation will be open to hikers only. Horses or other trail stock and mo torized wheeled equipment will not be permitted on the trail, said Getty. Public Hearing Announcement of the rules follows a two - week public heading period which ran from July 18 to July 31. A public meeting was held in Grants Pass July 18 to dis cuss various public proposals and recommendations made by the BLM Medford district manager who is responsible for the Rogue River recrea tion area. At the meeting the group went over the public hearing record which included the minutes of the Grants Pass meeting and about 100 let ters and cards submitted dur ing the hearing period. The principal factors considered were the esthetics of the Rogue river recreation area, safety - including fire haz ards, lack of forage for trail stock, and soil erosion. With some minor editorial changes rules previously recommend ed by the BLM Medford dis trict manager were agreed upon. Recreational Asset The group expressed the unanimous opinion that the lower Rogue river area is a major recreational asset to the State of Oregon. They rec ommended that a coordinated recreation plan involving the agencies represented be de veloped for all of the public lands along the lower Rogue river. Most of the public lands in the area are under BLM and Forest service jur isdiction. The possibility of develop ing alternative routes for horses was also discussed at the meeting. It was pointed out that there are some fire breaks and jeep trails above the BLM Rogue River trail that are presently open to horses and motorized equip ment and could be improved to further accommodate that type of recreation transporta tion. In his announcement Getty, who was not able to attend th$ Portland meeting, repeat ed a statement that he has made before that it is BLM's desire that the Rogue river recreation area be developed in such a fashion that' it will complement related local, state, and other federal pub lic recreation programs. Text of Rules Following is the . complete text of the rules adopted by BLM to be effectitve imme diately: 1. Camping in designated campground area is limited to seven days of continuous occupation by any one group. 2.
