8 B WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 1. 1113 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFOHD. OREGON UllUE MAYS BAT HOT AGAIN; SF GIANTS CLIP HOUSTON 3-1 By FRED DOWN UPI Spertt Wrllar Those front running Los Angeles Dodgers must real ize by now that the National league pennant race is as hot as Willie Mays' bat happens to be. The Dolgers are five games In front of the Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals and they are coasting along with a tidy three-game winning streak. Willie's average dipped to .240 in mid-season and this looked like the worst season he ever has had in the ma jors. But he's riffling that bat with six hits in his last eight trips to the plate and he's raised his season aver age to .290. The message to the Dodgers is loud and clear falter and you'll pay tne penalty of blowing a second straight pennant. Mays hammered out a tri ple and two singles to lead the Giants' 12-hlt attack Tues day night in a 3-1 victory over the Houston Colts. It was the first time the Giants beat the Colts in Houston in five games. Dodgers Down Cubs The Dodgers downed the Chicago Cubs. 4-1, the Car dinals topped the New York Mets, 4-3, the Pittsburgh Pi rates defeated the Milwaukee Braves, 3-0, and the Philadel phia Phillies scored a 7-1 tri umph after a 6-4 10-inning loss to the Cincinnati Reds in oth er National league games. Jim Duffalo went eight in nings and allowed six hits to win his fourth straight game without a loss for the Giants while Hal Brown suffered his seventh defeat against four wins. Mays tripled and scor ed in the fourth inning and contributed a key single in the sixth when the Giants cored their final run. Jim Wynn had two hits for the Colts. Maury Wills paced the Dodgers' 10-hit attack with a double and three singles and Don Drysdale pitched a six hitter and fanned six for his 14th victory against 12 losses. Drysdale, now gunning for his second straight 20 win sea son, halted Billy Williams' 12-game hitting streak, Shanls Shut Doer Bobby Shantz' 1 23-innings of close out relief pitching helped the Cardinals deal the Mets their 15th defeat in 17 games. Ken Boyer, Julian Javier and Tim McCarver had two hits each for the Cardi nals, with Boyer driving In the winning run with fifth inning single. Galen Cisco suffered his 10th loss against even wins. Don Cardwell shut out the Braves with four hits for eight innings and Al McBean clos ed it out in the ninth to earn Cardwell his eighth win against 12 losses. Key blows in the Pirates' three - run seventh inning were a single by Roberto Clemente, a dou ble by Donn Clendenon and a single by Jim Pagliaroni. Pete Rose's two run hom er and three hits by Vada Pinson led the Reds to their opening - game triumph at Philadelphia but the Phillies won the nightcap on the strength of three doubles by Johnny Callison and the three-hit pitching of Denis Bennett. Joey Jay suffered his 16th loss against four wins lor the Reds. ; GETS RIBBING Umpire Al Barlick, lakes some ribbing from Cub and Dodger ball players as he does his house cleaning on home plate with a rag because of the mud that accumulated from the rains that delay ed the game for 25 minutes in the eighth inning at Chicago. After things were cleaned up, the Dodgers went on to win the ball game, 4-1. (UPI) MEDmD&TRIBUNX sipcomnrs Dick Ellsworth Aiming At 20 Victories for Cubs By GENE BLUDEAN Chicago - (UPI) - The Chi cago Cubs, confident that Bob Kennedy already Is in the bis for manager - of - the- year honors, are quietly work ing on another project -ior the good of the club." This is to come up wun the team's first southpaw 20 game winner in 44 years. The last Cubs lefthander to win 20 or better was Jim Vaughn, who wound up the 1919 cam paign with a 21-14 record. The next one could be Dick Ellsworth, a 23-year-old port sider who has a 15-7 record with two months of the sea son left. If Ellsworth makes H, he could also put In a claim for the come - back of - the year award on the basis of slipping to B-20 in 1962 after a prom ising 10-11 with a seventh place club in 1961. Ellsworth Confidant Ellsworth is confident he will win 20 this year and Freddy Martin, his pitching coach, believes Ellsworth can not miss. 'If he doesn't get hurt or suddenly develop arm trou ble, I don't see how he can miss." Martin said. "His con trol is as good as any pitcher in the league right now, and he's been winning some close ones where he hasn't been getting much help from the batters." Martin put in a lot of time with Ellsworth In spring training The pitching coach said Ellsworth had a flaw in his motion faling to bend forward far enough with the throw. "It wasn't extremely notice able, but it was enough to af fect his control. He worked hard on getting rid of that. When he did, his control im proved almost 100 per cent," Martin said. Gets Curve Over Martin said that as a re sult Ellsworth has been get ting his curve over the cor ners, in addition, his protege developed a slider to give hlme a fourth good pitch to go along with a fast ball, change-up and curve he had been using for the past two seasons. Ellsworth said he would risk throwing a slider about once a game last season. "Now I work it In regu larly with good results," he said. Ellsworth was signed for a substantial bonus after ne graduated from Fresno, Calif., High school in 1958. His first appearance in a Cub uniform was in the annual boys ben efit game that year when he beat the White Sox 1-0 on four hits. Ph. 773-2903 By MARTIN LADER UPI Sports Writer Opposing hitters who con sider Don Drysdale a menace to life, limb and batting av erage are hereby warned that the American league now boasts a bigger-than-life du plicate in Stan Williams. Williams, a 6-4, 240-pound-er, can match his farmer Dodger teammate in size and he throws a mean enough fast ball to compare with Drys dale. Only trouble is, Wil liams hasn't enjoyed as much' success getting the batters out. All this is about to change, however, boasts Williams. His solution? To pitch with the same motion as Drysdale. Whatever the answer. It worked with huge success Tuesday night when Williams gave up just one hit in lead ing the New York Yankees to a 1-0 victory over Wash ington in the second game of a twi-night doubleheader aft er the Senators had taken the opener, 8-5. It was the best effort turned in by Williams since joining the Yankees last winter. Struck Out 11 The only hit off Williams was a third-inning double by Don Blasingame, and the pow erful righthander struck out 11 and walked only one. The Kansas City Athletics knocked second-place Chicago eight full games behind the Yankees by edging the White Sox, 4-3; the Baltimore Ori oles defeated the Cleveland Indians, 6-4; the Detroit Ti gers routed the Boston Red Sox, 10-1; and the Minnesota Twins downed the Los An geles Angels, 5-1. Williams, who retired the last 19 Washington batters in order, got the only run he needed for his fifth victory Portland - fflPD - Portland defeated Tacoma 5-0 and Hilo, Hawaii, edged Trl-City 1-0 in eight innings as the North west Regional Colt baseball tournament opened Tuesday night. Portland plays Hilo at 9 p.m. to the winners' bracket and Tacoma meets Tri-City at 6:30 p.m. in the losers' bracket of the four-day, double-elimi nation tourney tonight. in eight decisions when Tony Kubek tripled in the eighth inning and came home on Bobby Richardson's sacrifice fly. Bennie Daniels was the victim. Hit Two Homers Chuck Cottier smashed two homers for the Washington Senators, including a decisive three-run blow in the sixth inning that sent Yankee start er Whitey Ford down to de feat. Pinch-hitter George Alusik singled home the winning run for Kansas City with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning after the White Sox had tied the score with three runs in the top of the ninth. Reliever John Wyatt got the victory. Jim Gentile drove in four runs with two homers to help Robin Roberts gain his fifth straight triumph for Balti more. Roberts was touched for three home runs and final ly gave way to Stu Miller in the eighth Inning. George Smith, playing in only his second major league game, collected two doubles and a triple and Frank Lary coasted behind a nine-hitter for Detroit. Lee Stange, 4-3, treated to a three-run lead in the first inning, shut out Los Angeles on two hits for seven innings and after yielding a run in the eighth, needed relief help from Bill Dailey in the ninth. The Twins' early rally was culminated on a two-run sin gle by Bob Allison and an other run-producing hit by Earl Battey. Dean Chance, (10-12) took the loss.
